WASHINGTON (AP) ? Social Security. Medicare. Iraq. Afghanistan. Illegal immigration.
They're all costly to taxpayers and the next president presumably will have to address them to one degree or another. Yet GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney made no mention of those issues Thursday in his wide-ranging acceptance speech that closed the Republican National Convention.
The address was Romney's most sweeping attempt yet to outline the case for his candidacy. It was no time to get into the nitty-gritty of federal budgeting and solutions to the nation's ills. But Romney did find ways to talk about an array of other issues, some of them sensitive for him personally and politically.
Romney did, for example, pledge to "protect the sanctity of life," a reference to abortion, even though there are clear differences on the issue between him and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. He referred to his family as Mormons, a rarity for a candidate who typically refers to his religion as "my faith." And Romney even showed emotion, which he seldom does in public, when he spoke of longing to wake up again with a pile of children in the bedroom he shares with wife Ann.
But there was much Romney did not say, areas he didn't address. And those unmentioned topics say a lot about the challenges that face the Republican ticket in the final three months of the presidential campaign.
Here are some examples and some clues about why Romney may have chosen to skip them:
?WHAT TO DO ABOUT WAR. Polls show that most Americans want to get American troops out of the costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and President Barack Obama is generally seen as a president who is doing just that. Obama began drawing down the force with a plan to have all out by the end of 2014. While Romney has occasionally criticized Obama for signaling when the drawdown in Afghanistan would happen, he also has endorsed the 2014 end to U.S. combat in Afghanistan, subject to conditions at the time. Romney has criticized Obama's withdrawal plan but offered few details about how he would change it.
?GOVERNMENT AID: On Social Security, Romney has not talked specifics about what we would do with these budget-busting entitlement programs other than to say he would gradually raise the retirement age on the massive program for aid to seniors. He generally has steered clear of proposals to touch Medicare and Social Security in the short run, which leaves a relatively limited portion of the $3.6 trillion federal budget to cut. His addition of Ryan has caused Romney a headache as Democrats seek to make him own Ryan's budget proposals that call for Social Security benefits based on workers' needs and optional private alternatives to Medicare.
?ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: It's a touchy subject for both Romney and the Republican Party. Challenged on the right during the primary season, Romney struck a tougher stance on the issue than he had in the past. He emphasized his support for a U.S.-Mexico border fence and his opposition to education benefits to illegal immigrants, sometimes in sharp tones that caused some Hispanics to turn away. That's potentially problematic because Republicans are trying to narrow the advantage Democrats have among Hispanics, the nation's fastest-growing ethnic minority group. It represents large chunks of the voters in swing states like Florida and Colorado. Some 12.2 million Hispanics are expected to vote in November.
While Romney glossed over these issues, it's a good bet Democrats won't let him do so again between now and November.

Over the past 15-20 years there has been an impressive progress in the field of men?s health especially in the domain of understanding and treating various conditions. The introduction of Viagra certainly played a crucial role in this since it showed that conditions like impotence can be treated and initiated a whole new wave of research aimed at understanding the nature of such issues. Previously believed to be a matter of age, today erectile dysfunction is seen in a completely different league of conditions that can be effectively prevented and even inversed. All thanks to the body of data obtained from the numerous studies and experiments that were inspired by the success of Viagra. And as now specialists realize, erectile dysfunction is a matter of general health that can be prevented by keeping one?s health condition at a good level.
Frankly speaking, erectile dysfunction isn?t a health condition on its own. It is not a disease conditioned by certain factors or provoked by specific agents that target certain areas of the body. Erectile dysfunction never appears on its own and is always associated with another health condition that targets specific bodily systems that are responsible for the quality of erections experienced by the patient. To put it simply, male impotence is a symptom not a problem that requires a separate solution. And it took years of research for doctors to realize that.
In order to understand why it is so, we?ll have to understand the mechanism of erection first. There are two main components involved in the process: the nervous and the cardiovascular system. First, the brain is sexually stimulated by the means of sensory impulses or own imagination, which leads to sexual arousal. Then the nervous system transmits signals from the brain through the spine to the penile area, where the erection is formed. Once the signals reach the penile area the blood vessels start pumping the blood into the penile shaft to create a strong erection. That?s how erection works. It is a surprisingly complex process, which you don?t even pay attention to, and if there?s something wrong with any of the elements involved in the process it all will go wrong.
The most vulnerable element of the scheme is the cardiovascular system, namely the blood vessels that deliver blood to the penis. There are many common health conditions that can deteriorate blood vessels and cause less blood to be delivered to where it?s needed. Conditions like hypertension, heart diseases, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, alcoholism, low physical activity, obesity and others are rather common these days. And these are the primary causes for erectile dysfunction to take place. The more severe is the condition the lower is the quality of erections experienced by the patient. And it?s logic that if you prevent or manage these health problems you might be very well off without Viagra for a very long time.
So if you start experiencing unsatisfactory erections, ask yourself when was the last time you had a complete medical checkup? Erectile dysfunction never comes on its own, so it?s a sign that there?s something more serious to look out for. If you want to remain sexually active for a long period of time without the aid of drugs like Viagra then keep your general health under control and take all the measures necessary to prevent serious health conditions.

AS a full time dog walker, this makes me sad.
What happened to the time where you actually put your shoes on, put a leash on your dog, and walked him? Doesn?t anyone do this anymore?
The benefits of physically walking YOUR dog go far beyond the physical benefits. Spending time with your pet is extremely important. It strengthens the bond between you and leads to a strong, trusting relationship. Walk to strengthen your bond and your bodies! It also helps build trust ? If you have a timid or fearful pet, regular walks can help your pet to build confidence and trust. You will likely be exposing your pet to other humans and animals alike, and with you there for comfort your pet can learn to be comfortable around them.
More pet owners are turning to treadmills to make sure their dogs get exercise.
LOS ANGELES ? Like any true celebrity, Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier from ?The Artist? and ?Water for Elephants,? puts in his time on the treadmill.
At 10, Uggie doesn?t do a heavy workout, just a light trot and walking, said owner-trainer Omar Von Muller of Los Angeles. But Von Muller bought Uggie a DogPacer for those times when he can?t go out because of weather, work or paparazzi.
?It?s important to keep him in shape,? Von Muller said. ?If they don?t get their exercise, they get old too fast, just like people.?
Some 3 million dogs across the country were using treadmills in 2010, according to a survey of pet owners by the American Pet Products Association. The group asked about treadmills for the first time in its 2011/2012 survey because the machines were selling so briskly, APPA President Bob Vetere said.
It may look like the dog is going nowhere. But pet owners with fat, old or misbehaving dogs say they measure the benefits of canine treadmills in pounds, years and sleep.
Heather Chau borrowed a DogPacer when her rescue dog Heidi arrived weighing 115 pounds. Heidi is now down to 80 pounds, and Chau, a Las Vegas bookkeeper, was so impressed, she returned the donated DogPacer and bought her own.
Now all four of her dogs use the treadmill. Chau explains that she can?t walk four dogs at a time, and summer in Las Vegas heats up early and winds down late.
?I want to make sure the rest of their lives are the healthiest we can make them. If the treadmill promotes a longer life, then it?s easy to do it each day. Whatever they have been through is in the past. Whatever we can do now to help them lead a healthier, better life is worth it,? Chau said.
Treadmills come in a range of sizes and prices.
At LA Dog Works in Los Angeles, owner Andrew Rosenthal has a DogPacer, one of the newest and least expensive on the market at $499, that his Alsatian German shepherd Josh likes to use.
Rosenthal?s 24-hour dog care center, which includes boarding, grooming, training, daycare, hydrotherapy, massage therapy and a retail store, also uses a $3,000 Jog A Dog and a $40,000 underwater treadmill.
The most visible difference between a human treadmill and a canine treadmill is the size, because a dog?s stride is longer and his body shorter than a human?s, said David Ezra, the owner of Las Vegas-based DogPacer. DogPacer plans to release a treadmill for toy dogs in September and the price will be smaller too, Ezra said.
The Pooch Hotel in Los Angeles, owned by Petco Animal Supplies Inc., offers a treadmill to help keep pets in shape. About half the dog population has some kind of weight problem, so it was a no-brainer, said Jason Michal, who runs the hotels as Petco?s vice president of pet services and hospitality.
For home use, Pennsylvania-based GoPet has canine treadmills and a treadwheel, which looks like a giant hamster wheel, for small to large breeds, ranging from $475 to $1,225.
Dog trainer April Suhr of Las Vegas believes shelters across the country could make animals more adoptable if the animals used treadmills just two or three days a week.
It?s easy for a dog in a shelter to go cage crazy, she said. ?They pace. They don?t focus. They bark. They won?t eat. They won?t make eye contact.?
The answer is exercise, she said. ?It?s why the gym is so good for us when we are stressed out. It puts our endorphins to good use.?
Suhr, who volunteers at Adopt a Rescue Pet and has her own business, 4 Pawz On The Floor, also works part-time in a pet superstore. She brought a rescue dog, Max, to the store every week to use the machine.
?Not only did he calm down, but he was using the treadmill one day when a woman came in, saw him, fell in love with him and adopted him,? she said.
Suhr has one at her home for her three pets and her foster dogs. Suhr figures she would have to run miles and miles and spend hours and hours to get all her dogs as much exercise as they get on the treadmill in minutes.
Marie Czarnecki, 73, of Las Vegas is having her left knee replaced in a few weeks and will be out of commission for a few months.
She ordered a DogPacer the first day she saw one at her trainer?s office. Her shelties, Dee Dee, 6, and Sundance, 3, have been using it for several months. She calls it the best thing in her garage besides her car.
?Now I take them out with a leash, they get on, I set it and they go twice a day for 10 minutes,? she said. ?They run over a mile a day and they do like it.?
Be the first to like this.

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.
Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.
"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.
This is one creepy mystery.
"The Imposter" initially seems to be a tutorial in identity theft, as well as a cautionary tale about the susceptibility of people who have lost a loved one. But that's not the half of it.
Layton's film joins the top ranks of nonfiction films because he recognizes that in this case no solution could be as engrossing as the questions.
[The] unbelievable blend of confidence trickery and seemingly wilful blindness is what fascinates most in The Imposter, and raises more tantalising and disturbing questions.
You couldn't make this stuff up - and no one would buy it as fiction. But as a documentary, it's a different matter.
Layton may be making a sophisticated point about the elusive nature of truth but at the same time, it's a point made at the expense of the Barclays.
The year's most fascinating and frightening doc so far, The Imposter delves far beneath the hysterical tabloid headlines.
It's both preposterous and horrific, and therein lies its powerful, disquieting charm.
The real imposter here is the director.
A fascinating glimpse into the mind of a cunning con-man...and it's just as cunning as he was in constructing the story to hold our interest.
Trails off at the worst possible moment...its flaccid legal summary and closing visual manipulations are intentional, leaving audiences with a thoroughly sickening feeling to appreciate Bourdin's prolonged dance of narcissism.
A terrific tale of deception and self-deception, propelled by the presence of the smirking, cocky Barclay claimant, Fr?d?ric Bourdin.
The idea of "The Imposter" is more intriguing than the film's execution.
Keeps you unsettled, haunted, enthralled.
Everything about this story is unconvincing, except for the fact that it - or some version of it - happened.
The Imposter is one of those rare documentaries that, while its hard to know exactly how much is intensified for the purposes of making the film, is genuinely unsettling and infuriating to believe as fact and fiction.
Director Bart Layton owes a huge debt to Errol Morris, particularly "The Thin Blue Line," for his approach to this incredible story.

Rat studies show that cognitive control, an ability eroded in disorders such as schizophrenia, could be protected with brain training
By Daisy Yuhas
A rat on a rotating arena must avoid a zone where his feet will receive an electric shock (signified by the red wedge). The yellow line corresponds to the rat's path.

Early experiences not only shape adult lives, but they might also protect against future cognitive problems resulting from brain damage, according to neurobiologists studying the mental abilities of rats with brain lesions. Typically, these lesions impair a rat's ability to focus and filter out distractions. But scientists now have evidence that an early behavioral intervention could prevent this effect.
Researchers at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research, and New York University have demonstrated how just teaching young rats to focus on relevant cues could protect against cognitive decline related to their brain injuries. The finding appears August 22 in Neuron
"We never imagined you could do something for these animals that could essentially compensate for a major developmental defect," says neuroscientist Daniel Weinberger at the Lieber Institute for Brain Development at Johns Hopkins University. Weinberger, who is unaffiliated with the study, calls this work a totally novel approach and discovery.
In a healthy brain, cognitive control allows an individual to devote resources toward a specific object and tune in to only the correct cues. This is what, for example, allows you to pay attention when your boss is talking to you despite the appearance of five new e-mails in your inbox and a ringing telephone. This control deteriorates, however, as a consequence of certain brain injuries and in certain mental disorders such as schizophrenia.
For this study, researchers induced a brain injury in rats by injecting seven-day old pups with neuron-killing acid. Specifically, they targeted a region of the brain called the ventral hippocampus. The hippocampus is a region implicated in memory; it also neighbors the brain's cognitive command center, the prefrontal cortex. Rats that receive this injection possess normal cognitive functioning in their youth and adolescence, but as they enter adulthood, they show sharp cognitive and behavioral changes. These changes occur because as the brain continues to develop, the injury's damage is amplified.
The scientists first compared the cognitive control of healthy adult rats with those that had brain lesions. They placed rats on a rotating arena. Rats had to attend to cues in the room to orient themselves and avoid a region of the arena that would send a mild electric shock to their feet. As expected, adult rats with normal brains learned to avoid getting zapped much more quickly than those with lesions.
After demonstrating the normal cognitive deficits in these rats, the researchers added an additional level of comparison. They trained a group of adolescent rats?some with and some without lesions?to attend to relevant stimuli in a rotating arena. As adults, the trained rats were compared with damaged- and normal-brain rats that had received no training. Researchers placed these rats in a new study environment: a T-shape maze in which certain branches of the maze would be electrified. As in the previous experiment, untrained lesioned animals struggled to avoid the electrified areas. Brain-damaged rats with training, however, performed at the same level as healthy rodents. These adults had retained cognitive control even after maturation.
In addition, the researchers examined the rats' brain activity using electrodes. The scientists found that untrained lesioned individuals display low synchrony, meaning neurons fired in an uncoordinated manner, in the brain's inter-hippocampal region. But the trained rats?with or without lesions?displayed very similar, synchronous brain activity.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? Jurors were set to begin their second day of deliberations Thursday in a multibillion dollar patent infringement case pitting Apple against Samsung over the design of iPhones and iPads.
After a three-week federal trial in San Jose, a jury of seven men and two women picked from a pool of Silicon Valley residents will try to decide if Samsung Electronics Co. ripped off Apple Inc. designs or whether Apple wronged Samsung.
With so much money and market clout at stake, few experts were expecting a quick verdict. A decision likely won't come anytime soon, according to jury experts, attorneys and courtroom observers.
"This case has huge implications," said University of Notre Dame Law Professor Mark P. McKenna. "It could result in injunctions against both companies" involving the sales of products.
It took the judge more than two hours to read the 109 pages of instructions to the jury. As a verdict is reached, jurors must fill out a 20-page form that includes dozens of check-off boxes.
"The verdict form is crazy," said Karen Lisko, who runs a jury consulting company that specializes in patent trials. "It's incredibly complicated."
Jurors have several different smartphones and computer tablets in the jury room to help them determine which device is alleged to have violated what patent.
Apple argues that Samsung should pay the Cupertino-based company $2.5 billion for ripping off its iPhone and iPad technology when it marketed competing devices.
Attorneys for Samsung asked the jury to award it $399 million after claiming Apple used Samsung technology without proper compensation.
Lisko said it could take the jury an entire day just to devise a routine and system to sift through the facts and began actual deliberations.
"The first day is usually very messy," she said.
It took jurors more than a week to reach a verdict in another major patent case, Google v. Oracle. That San Francisco panel decided in May that Google did infringe Oracle's patents related to the Java computer language, but the panel awarded no damages after it couldn't come to a unanimous agreement on several other points.
During closing arguments Tuesday, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny said Samsung was having a "crisis of design" after the launch of the iPhone, and executives with the South Korean company were determined to illegally cash in on the success of the revolutionary device.
Samsung's lawyer countered that the technology giant was simply and legally giving consumers what they want: Smart phones with big screens. They say they didn't violate any of Apple's patents and further claimed that Apple's claimed innovations were actually created by other companies.
The case went to the jury after last-minute talks between chief executives failed to resolve the dispute.

Everyone who owns a car must buy auto insurance. Getting the right policy can be a challenge. Try to find coverage that handles your needs without breaking the bank. Before purchasing auto insurance, it is critical that you do research and know the exact type of insurance you need. Some great advice on auto insurance can be found in the following article.
Being a member of certain organizations can lower your premiums. The insurance company may offer a discount with your proof of membership. Credit union members or members of organizations, like AARP, may offer you discounts on an auto insurance policy.
Ask about group auto insurance rates through your employer. There are some employers who work with insurance companies to get lower group rates. There are also different levels of discounts, so make sure to ask which discounts you are eligible for. Length of employment, for example, may affect the rate you pay. If no group plans are currently in place, you should explore the possibility of getting one.
TIP! When purchasing car accessories, assess the amount that insurance covers in theft or damage. Insurance companies usually will cover only the value these parts add to your car, and that is probably not much.
Most companies offer discounts for having anti-theft devices installed on the vehicle. The more likely your car is to be stolen, the higher your insurance premium will be. Your policy will cost less if you have a safer car.
Insurance has many factors, and the cost is just one of the ones you should think about when doing research. You need to read all the language in the contract, to be aware of the deductible amounts, the coverage levels and the benefit limits.
If you bundle your insurance, you may pay less. Keep your eyes open for these bundle deals, so you can insure everything you own on one policy, making it cheaper and easier handle. Make sure to compare the cost of combining your home and auto or insuring them separately before making the decision to bundle.
TIP! Accidents in the daylight hours are most frequently caused by elderly drivers. Keep this is mind, because it might affect insurance policy rates.
Remove any vehicles you sell, or otherwise dispose of, from your auto insurance policy as soon as possible. It is important to deal with, however, since unnecessary insurance will be costly.
Check into the rental car coverage of your insurance policy. If not, renting a car means paying extra for coverage when your own car is in the repair shop. This extra coverage can be way more than you think. 00 every day that your car is in the shop.
Before you purchase a car, it?s important to talk to your insurance agent first. You can contact your insurance company or use online resources for information about which vehicles have lower premiums. That advice will help you make an informed decision about whether it might be a better deal to buy a formerly owned car, rather than a new vehicle. In addition, purchasing vehicles with good safety ratings can help save a large sum of money on car insurance.
TIP! Your car insurance is strongly affected by traffic tickets and points influencing your driving record. By that same token, your auto insurance rates can also rapidly plummet once the negative items are expunged from your record.
Many people believe that auto insurance rates go down automatically for young drivers once they reach 25. The truth is that they start to decrease once they reach 18 as long the driver is responsible and drives safely.
Oftentimes, drivers over 55 years old enjoy discounts on their auto insurance, as do many people who?ve taken defensive driving courses. A discount, almost 10% in some cases, is certainly a nice perk.
Be sure to do thorough research when your insurance company tries to get you to purchase a warranty to cover parts that will be used to fix your car. A lot of repair shops guarantee the work that they do, while auto parts makers repair the parts that they make. Don?t spend money on a warranty that means nothing.
TIP! Location matters when it comes to insurance premiums. Moving to a new city or state could drastically reduce your premiums.
Figure out what kind of insurance coverage you should have for your car. You will have many options, but a lot of them won?t pertain to you. If you have a record of minor crashes, however, it may be worth paying extra for collision coverage.
With other expenses already so high, it is a good idea to drop some of those after-market upgrades that only add to aesthetic value. Luxuries in your vehicle, while nice, are not a necessity. The reason is because if your vehicle is stolen or totaled, you will not be reimbursed for its damage.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.?? They call it "rahowa" ? short for racial holy war ? and they are preparing for it by joining the ranks of the world's fiercest fighting machine, the U.S. military.
White supremacists, neo-Nazis and skinhead groups encourage followers to enlist in the Army and Marine Corps to acquire the skills to overthrow what some call the ZOG ? the Zionist Occupation Government. Get in, get trained and get out to brace for the coming race war.
If this scenario seems like fantasy or bluster, civil rights organizations take it as deadly serious, especially given recent events. Former U.S. Army soldier Wade Page opened fire with a 9 mm handgun at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin on August 5, murdering six people and critically wounding three before killing himself during a shootout with police.
The U.S. Defense Department as well has stepped up efforts to purge violent racists from its ranks, earning praise from organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has tracked and exposed hate groups since the 1970s.
Page, who was 40, was well known in the white supremacist music scene. In the early 2000s he told academic researcher Pete Simi that he became a neo-Nazi after joining the military in 1992. Fred Lucas, who served with him, said Page openly espoused his racist views until 1998, when he was demoted from sergeant to specialist, discharged and barred from re-enlistment.
While at Fort Bragg, in North Carolina, Page told Simi, he made the acquaintance of James Burmeister, a skinhead paratrooper who in 1995 killed a black Fayetteville couple in a racially motivated shooting. Burmeister was sentenced to life in prison and died in 2007.
No one knows how many white supremacists have served since then. A 2008 report commissioned by the Justice Department found half of all right-wing extremists in the United States had military experience.
"We don't really think this is a huge problem, at Bragg, and across the Army," said Colonel Kevin Arata, a spokesman for Fort Bragg.
"In my 26 years in the Army, I've never seen it," the former company commander said.
Experts have identified the presence of street gang members as a more widespread problem. Even so, the Pentagon has launched three major pushes in recent decades to crack down on racist extremists. The first directive was issued in 1986, when Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger ordered military personnel to reject supremacist organizations.
That failed to stop former Marine T.J. Leyden, with two-inch SS bolts tattooed above his collar, from serving from 1988 to 1991 while openly supporting neo-Nazi causes. A member of the Hammerskin Nation, a skinhead group, he said he hung a swastika from his locker, taking it down only when his commander politely asked him to ahead of inspections by the commanding general.
Only on NBCNews.com
"I went into the Marine Corps for one specific reason: I would learn how shoot," Leyden told Reuters. "I also learned how to use C-4 (explosives), blow things up. I took all my military skills and said I could use these to train other people," said Leyden, 46, who has since renounced the white power movement and is a consultant for the anti-Nazi Simon Wiesenthal Center.
Rattled by Oklahoma blast
In 1995, eight months before the Fort Bragg murders, two former Army soldiers bombed the Oklahoma City federal building, killing 168 people. With a growing awareness of the spreading militia movement, the Pentagon in 1996 banned military personnel from participating in supremacist causes and authorized commanders to cashier personnel for rallying, recruiting or training racists.
"What's scary about Page is that he served in the 1990s when putatively this was being treated quite seriously by the military. There's plenty of other Pages who served during the war on terror, and we don't know what they're going to be doing over the next decade or so," said Matt Kennard, author of the forthcoming book "Irregular Army: How the U.S. Military Recruited Neo-Nazis, Gang Members and Criminals to Fight the War on Terror."
Kennard argues the U.S. military was so desperate for troops while fighting simultaneous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that it allowed extremists, felons and gang members into the armed forces.
The military can grant a "moral waiver" to allow a convicted criminal or otherwise ineligible person into the armed forces, and the percentage of recruits granted such waivers grew from 16.7 percent in 2003 to 19.6 percent in 2006, according to Pentagon data obtained by the Palm Center in a 2007 Freedom of Information Act request. But the Pentagon says no waiver exists for participation in extremist organizations.
"Our standards have not changed; participation in extremist activities has never been tolerated and is punishable under the Uniformed Code of Military Justice," said Eileen Lainez, a Defense Department spokeswoman.
The Pentagon's third directive against white supremacists was issued in 2009 after a Department of Homeland Security report expressed concern that right-wing extremists were recruiting veterans returning from wars overseas.
The Pentagon's 2009 instruction, updated in February 2012, directs commanders to remain alert for signs of racist activity and to intervene when they see it. It bans soldiers from blogging or chatting on racist websites while on duty.
"This is the best we've ever seen," said Heidi Beirich, leader of the Southern Poverty Law Center's intelligence project, referring to the Pentagon's attitude. "It was really disheartening under the Bush administration how lightly they took it, so this is a major advance."
Her group monitors online chatter among self-described active-duty warriors serving overseas and reports it to military officials. It also receives regular calls from military investigators asking about racists in the service.
The Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), another civil rights monitor, have helped train officers on how to spot extremists, although Mark Pitcavage, director of investigative research at the ADL, says the military lacks comprehensive training for recruiters and commanders. He called the military's reaction when alerted to white supremacists "patchy."
"We've discovered a great range of response, from getting a phone call the next day saying, 'He's already out,' to not doing anything at all," Pitcavage said.
The tattoo matrix
The Army showed Reuters a one-hour presentation it says was designed to educate soldiers and Army leaders about its extremism policy and how to respond, including to white supremacy groups. Penalties for extremist ideology may include being removed from the military, having security clearances yanked or being demoted.
"The standard hateful message has not been replaced, just packaged differently with issues like freedom of speech, anti-gun control themes, tax reform and oppression," the presentation says, noting that recruitment may be difficult to detect, occurring quietly "in bars and break areas" on bases.
The presentation instructs Army leaders to look out for tattooed symbols of lightning bolts, skulls, swastikas, eagles and Nordic warriors. Skinheads may have tattoos showing barbed wire, hobnailed boots and hammers.
In a detailed flowchart called a "Tattoo Decision Support Matrix," Army leaders are shown how to respond to various tattoos. At the time of publication, the Army was unable to identify the locations where this course was being taught.
Screening out rogues
"We're very strict on the tattoo policy here within this recruiting station," said Sergeant Aaron Iskenderian, head of the Army recruiting office in Fayetteville, the Army town next to Fort Bragg.
With the United States withdrawn from Iraq, winding down from Afghanistan and unemployment stuck above 8 percent, recruiters can be choosy again.
Iskenderian cited the example of a young man who came in recently with a tattoo of the Confederate flag.
"We're in the South here. It's considered Southern heritage. It's on the General Lee," Iskenderian said, referring to the car from the television show "The Dukes of Hazzard."
"Is it racist? I asked him, 'What does it mean to you?' and he said, 'Southern pride.'"
The potential recruit also told Iskenderian he had a black girlfriend. Iskenderian sent the issue up the chain of command, and the young man was rejected.
Academics who study white supremacists say proponents of the "infiltration strategy" of joining the U.S. military have adapted, telling skinheads to deceive military recruiters by letting their hair grow, avoiding or covering tattoos, and suppressing their racist views.
"You have to differentiate between some of the grandiose fantasies of some of the leaders of the movement and what actually is going on," cautioned the ADL's Pitcavage.
For neo-Nazis who get past the screeners, as with the gang members, the military needs a comprehensive strategy, said Carter F. Smith, a former military investigator who is now a professor of criminal justice at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee.
"They are some of the most disciplined soldiers we have. They really want to learn to shoot those weapons," Smith said. "The problem wasn't just that we were opening the floodgates to let them in. We let them out after prosecution or when their time was up and we didn't let the police know."

For the last several months, Republicans and Democrats have been?posturing their way towards the the edge?of the so-called "fiscal cliff," a mix of nearly $500 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts set to go into effect in January.?It was thought that flying off this cliff would cause a "modest recession" in the first half of 2013, but it turns out, the consequences may be significantly worse.
RELATED: Gingrich Is the Most Polarizing Candidate But Also Most Admired
According to a new analysis by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, the country will be plunged into a severe recession if Congress fails to act on the fiscal cliff,?The Washington Post's?Lori Montgomery?reports. Per Montgomery:
The massive round of New Year?s belt-tightening ... would disrupt recent economic progress, push the unemployment rate back up to 9.1 percent by the end of 2013 and cause economic conditions ?that will probably be considered a recession,? the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said.
The outlook is considerably darker than the forecast?the agency released in January, when CBO predicted that the fiscal cliff would trigger a modest recession in the first half of 2013, followed by a quick recovery.
While that's a scary thought, it's not something that will necessarily spur politicians to action. First, this is all set to happen after the election so it doesn't pose as an immediate obstacle for either President Obama or Mitt Romney. Secondly, with a Democratically-controlled Senate and a Republican-controlled House, the politics of passing a bill to stave off the threat isn't adding up yet. (It could be resolved during the lame duck sessions according to some analysts.) Thus far, Democrats have used the fiscal cliff as leverage against the Republicans, threatening to let the tax hikes and spending cuts go into effect?unless Republicans agree to raises taxes on the very wealthy. The CBO just made that gambit a tad riskier, giving Republicans ammo to say the other side is taking the economy hostage.

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism soon after my daughter, who is now 13, was born. Once the right levels of medication were determined there hasn?t been a problem. When I decided to change to a vegan diet I found it commonly reported that eating soy could have a negative affect on thyroid functions. I don?t eat a lot of soy but definitely more than I have in the past. I?m all too familiar with how I feel when my thyroid levels are off and I felt fine, but I didn?t want to take a chance. I scheduled an appointment with my internal medicine doctor to see if he recommended testing my thyroid levels based on the change in my diet.
After a lengthy conversation about plant-based diets he recommended not only testing my thyroid levels but also a litany of vitamin levels as well. Throughout our conversation he seemed to be the most concerned overall about getting enough protein, carbohydrates, Vitamin D, calcium, iron and B vitamins.?
I?m happy to report that ALL of my tests came back positive with a report of excellent health. My thyroid medication will stay as is and no supplements recommended.
After my conversation with the doctor and having the lab tests and blood work done I was curious as to what exactly do B vitamins provide for the body and what foods are considered good sources. According to my doctor,?a deficiency in one or more of the Vitamin B complexes can zap energy and brain power. I wanted to know more.
B vitamins play a bigger role in having a healthy body than I realized. They?re responsible for? cell metabolism, healthy brain cells, supporting nervous system and immune system functions as well as cardiovascular and respiratory health, proper circulation, mental outlook and cholesterol levels, fighting off free radicals, support for the formation of red blood cells, making energy from the foods you eat, muscle tone and even healthy hair and skin as well as overall energy and endurance levels.
Are you lacking B vitamins? Consider this?23 million or so people that are on a vegetarian or vegan diet along with 6 million women of childbearing age, 100 million baby boomers aged 50+ and nearly half of Americans who are stressed (which robs the body of B vitamins) are potentially at-risk for not getting enough B vitamins. Then add in the average American who eats an average American diet which is severely lacking in B vitamins. And what do you get? Energy crisis, brain fog and more.?(Source: Garden of Life Magazine)

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? A Swedish advertising agency that air-dropped hundreds of teddy bears carrying pro-human rights messages into Belarus has rejected a summons for questioning by the former Soviet republic's KGB security agency.
Instead, Studio Total offered Tuesday to discuss the matter directly with the country's authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko, and invited him to Sweden.
The KGB on Friday summoned three members of Studio Total ? Hannah Frey and co-founders Tomas Mazetti and Per Cromwell ? to explain their "illegal crossing" into Belarus. The summons threatened them with fines, six-month prison terms or "corrective labor" unless they appeared within 10 days.
The group's July 4 teddy bear stunt infuriated Lukashenko, who fired two generals over it. It also added stress to already deteriorating diplomatic relations between Stockholm and Minsk. Belarus this month effectively expelled the Swedish ambassador and ordered Sweden to close its embassy in Minsk over what Stockholm said was its push for human rights.
"Threatening someone with 'corrective' work if they don't accept your invitations is considered bad manners," the Swedish team wrote in a sarcastic open letter to Lukashenko.
The team said they had received threats by email and telephone since the teddy bear stunt and that "all trails" point to the KGB.
"To sum it up, all these small issues have made us lose our appetite to come and visit you," they wrote, suggesting instead that Lukashenko come to Sweden.
The KGB said Friday it wants the Swedes to participate in its "investigative actions" so it can clarify the role each person played and help it decide how to deal with two Belarusian men accused of aiding the Swedes.
Studio Total at the time warned that Lukashenko may be using the two Belarusians as pawns to force the Swedes to go to Minsk.
Lukashenko has ruled Belarus, a nation of 10 million, since 1994, repressing opposition groups and independent news media while preserving a quasi-Soviet economy with about 80 percent of industry in state hands. He has earned the nickname in the West of "Europe's last dictator."
Although the teddy bear drop was not officially cited as a reason for the closing of Sweden's embassy in Minsk or the barring of Sweden's envoy there, Lukashenko was last week cited as accusing Swedish diplomats of involvement in the stunt.
