Chinese region rocked by earthquake

Mudslides caused by heavy rains have killed 50 and left another 42 missing, China's civil affairs ministry said.

The national agency said that storms have ravaged 11 provinces and regions - mainly in south China - since June 20 and triggered the deadly mudslides.

About 440,000 people have been relocated and that tens of thousands of homes are severely damaged, the ministry added.

The death toll continues to rise. The state-run China News Service reported today that four people were killed and another 37 missing from a severe mudslide in south western China's Sichuan province.

Mudslides are common in China's mountainous areas. Critics point to deforestation for soil erosion that has made China prone to mudslides after strong rainfall.

In the far-west of China, a strong earthquake shook buildings and cutting off electricity in the remote mountainous area and injuring at least 17 people.

The US Geological Survey measured the quake, which hit China's Xinjiang region, at magnitude-6.3, while China's Earthquake Networks Centre put it at 6.6.

The Xinjiang regional government reported no deaths but said 17 people were injured. China's state-run Xinhua News Agency said most of the victims were tourists.

Residents near the epicentre were shaken out of bed in pre-dawn darkness and some households lost electricity, Xinhua reported.

The quake toppled several buildings 186 miles to the west in the regional capital, Urumqi, Xinhua said, adding that rescuers had been dispatched to the sparsely populated area to search for casualties.
