While an improving economy and white-hot growth in Macau drove casino stocks to new heights in 2011, the smart money in today?s market will value sustainable returns over eye-popping ? but volatile ? immediate gains. Consider Caesars, which roared out of the gate with a 58% return last Wednesday but has lost speed in every session since.
One week?s action on an IPO does not a trend make ? particularly since the offering represented only a tiny fraction of the casino?s shares. Still, the stock?s quick flash and subsequent flameout illustrates the gaming industry?s abiding truth: The only sure thing about luck is how fast it can change.
The past five years have been a nonstop roller-coaster ride for casino stocks. From pinnacle performance in 2006 and early 2007, major stocks in the sector lost 80% to 90% of their value in less than 24 months. But as the U.S. economy has improved and opportunities have opened up in Macau, a former Portuguese colony now administered by the People?s Republic of China, the industry?s fortunes have rebounded dramatically. Some gaming stocks ? particularly casino owners with high-end properties in Macau ? saw 50% to 60% share-price growth in 2011.
While Macau remains an attractive opportunity for casinos such as Melco Crown Entertainment (NASDAQ:MPEL), Wynn Resorts (NYSE:WYNN) and MGM Resorts (NYSE:MGM), growth is likely to slow from a January level of nearly 35% to a more sustainable 15% to 20% in the second half of this year.
The Securities & Exchange Commission has taken an interest in some casino companies? Macau operations. While the agency has not charged any company with wrongdoing, it is reviewing documents related to the Macau gaming licenses of WYNN and Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS).
A winning play in casino stocks this year will look a lot different than it did in 2011. First, you can?t expect monster returns. Growth in Macau will slow as business operations broaden their focus beyond VIP junkets from China. U.S. regional operators such as Boyd Gaming (NYSE:BYD) and Penn National (NYSE:PENN) will have a better year than they did in 2011, but stronger competition from tribal gaming operations could have a negative impact.
Of course, there are no sure things in the gaming sector. All of these stocks are far from recession-proof and will take a hit if the economy slips. Most operators are carrying quite a bit of debt, and even the high-roller growth in Macau is by no means stable at this point. But if you have a little mad money stashed away, four of the companies mentioned above have relatively sustainable gaming stocks to play now:
Melco Crown Entertainment
If you believe in the China opportunity enough to let it all ride on Macau, MPEL is as much of a pure play as you?re going to get. MPEL blew investors? socks off last week with news that its opulent City of Dreams Casino posted fourth-quarter earnings of $107.5 million on $1 billion in revenue. That?s nearly six times higher than the profit it posted for the same quarter a year earlier ? and revenue was up 30%, too. With a market cap of $6.6 billion, MPEL is trading at $12 ? 85% above its 52-week low in April 2011. MPEL has total cash of $1.2 billion and total debt of $2.3 billion. Its one-year return is 66%.
Las Vegas Sands
Despite its old-school name, LVS is a huge player in Macau. It boasts the world?s largest casino ? the 3,000-suite Venetian Macau ? which dominates the prime Cotai Strip. With a market cap of $42 billion, LVS is trading around $52 ? 44% above its 52-week low in March 2011. LVS has total cash of about $4 billion and total debt of $9.7 billion. Its one-year return is 8%, but take note: This stock has been extremely volatile over the past year.
Wynn Resorts
WYNN also boasts a high-roller-friendly facility, the Wynn Macau, with its Sky Casino. It plans to open the Cotai Resort Hotel on the strip in 2015. Chairman and CEO Steve Wynn?s high-profile tiff with right-hand man Kazuo Okada sparked the SEC?s interest and has the potential to become a distraction. With a market cap of nearly $14 billion, WYNN is trading around $111 ? 10% above its 52-week low in December. WYNN has total cash of about $2 billion and total debt of $3.1 billion. Its one-year return is -7.8%, but it?s poised to gain if Macau continues to grow and the SEC inquiry is favorably resolved.
MGM Resorts
As Las Vegas casino revenue grows, so do?MGM?s prospects. The Nevada Gaming Control Board last week said December gambling revenue on the strip rose by 3.6%, and slot-machine revenue rose over 6%. Convention attendance also rose dramatically last year. While MGM Macau has helped ease the profit pinch, the company?s best opportunity may be a new social-media game inspired by Zynga?s (NASDAQ:ZNGA) FarmVille. With a market cap of $7 billion, MGM is trading around $14.50 ? 96% above its 52-week low last November. MGM has total cash of about $2 billion and total debt of $14.5 billion. Its one-year return is -4%, but its financial position is strengthening, and the stock has some upside.

Baseball Expert Tony DeMarco has been covering the big leagues since 1987, and been casting Hall of Fame ballots for the last 14 years. He answers questions weekly here:
Q. Adam Dunn had by far the worst year of his career last season. Do you think he is due for a big bounce-back in 2012? Who are some other candidates to improve after subpar seasons?
? Aaron, Colorado Springs
A. There will be a bounce-back, but count me as skeptical about how big it will be. The problem here was Dunn wasn't hurt in 2011. He simply fell off the map statistically ? a historical drop-off that must be blamed mostly on mechanics, with a contributing factor of changing leagues and having to learn a new set of pitchers.
At 32, his days as a 40-homer, 100-RBI guy are in the past. I see him hitting in the low .200s with about 25 homers and 75 RBI.
You also can place Dunn's teammate ? Alex Rios ? in that category: Not hurt for any significant length of time, just collapsed in 2011. But at 30, he's two years younger than Dunn, so we'll give him a better shot at returning to his typical season line of .275/.323/.434 with 17 homers, 70 RBI and 21 steals.
These other 2012 comeback candidates are more health-related:
How about Hanley Ramirez and Josh Johnson? Nagged by back issues, Ramirez was limited to .245/10/45 in 385 at-bats. Johnson (shoulder) made nine great starts before shutting it down in May, and not returning. If these two potential All-Stars put up 2010-type numbers, watch out for the Marlins.
Another set of comeback-candidate teammates is Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer. Health is the key for both.The Rangers are betting that Joe Nathan still has plenty left in the tank in his second season after Tommy John surgery, and you figure he'll get close to 50 save opportunities.
Shin-Soo Choo, 29, had back-to-back .300/20-homer/20-steal seasons in 2009 and 2010 before injuries cut his 2011 season almost in half.
Carl Crawford gets an asterisk, as he'll be coming off wrist surgery, and likely won't be ready until May.
And no individual comeback may have more importance than that of Kendry Morales. If he's the middle-of-the-order, left-handed threat he was in 2009, the Angels' lineup takes on a far more dangerous look.
Albert Pujols needs protection from the cleanup spot, and a fully healthy Morales is by far the best option over right-handed hitters Torii Hunter, Mark Trumbo and Vernon Wells.
The other category that often produces comeback success stories is third-year players who suffered through sophomore-jinx second seasons after strong rookie campaigns. For me, this category is led by Jason Heyward, who's still only 22, and did have injury issues last season.
Q. I just watched 'Moneyball'. How accurate is it compared to what really happened? What do the people involved have to say about the movie?
? Ernie, Taiwan
A. I'd call it loosely accurate. The then-groundbreaking idea of placing heavy emphasis on on-base percentage, the position switch of Scott Hatteberg, and utilizing unorthodox reliever Chad Bradford ? all big in the movie ? certainly were parts of the A's success that season (2002).
But the more important aspects of that team are all but ignored in the movie ? which of course, is based on the book by Michael Lewis, who drew his share of criticism for using only the facts he felt supported his case.
The success of the A's in 2002, and that entire 1999-2006 period (five playoff appearances), centered on the fact that they got tremendous production from Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito while all three were making relatively small amounts of money. They're ignored in the movie.
Miguel Tejada also fits in that big stats/small salary category, although he does have a part in the movie (as played by former big-leaguer Royce Clayton).
The one highly inaccurate portrayal in the script was that of manager Art Howe. He wasn't necessarily on board with all the new ideas Billy Beane was employing, but anybody who knows him (myself included) says he was one of the nicer people in the game. But Howe (as played by Philip Seymour Hoffman), was surly, recalcitrant and self-centered in the movie, and he has spoken out against that characterization.
The Jonah Hill character is based on then-Beane assistant Paul DePodesta, who chose not to be attached to the film in any way. Hill's character (named Peter Brand) is a socially awkward, nerdy type who presents Beane with sabermetrics data. DePodesta is a Harvard grad, but played football and baseball there.
One more thing: Although Beane and Brad Pitt are very different physically (Beane is 6-4, over 200 pounds and has black hair), Pitt nailed Beane's mannerisms.
Q. If the Seattle Mariners are going to turn things around and become a contender again, what's it going to take?
? Steven Smith, Quincy, Wash.
A. A good place to start would be to land a new, huge local television rights deal. That's what both the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have done ? and they've stepped up to join the AL elite franchises as a result.
The Angels' recently re-negotiated deal is worth $3 billion ? that's right, billion with a 'b' ? over 20 years, or $150 million annually. That's before the gates are even opened, or a ticket is sold. So now you see why they can afford to give Albert Pujols $240 million over 10 years, even though it's almost a sure bet he won't be the same player he is now come 2018 or so.
The Angels also stole away C.J. Wilson from the Rangers, who turned around and spent over $100 million to sign Japanese League star right-hander Yu Darvish. Projected 2012 payrolls have the Angels in the $140 million range, the Rangers around $120 million and the Mariners at around $90 million ? and unless you're the Tampa Bay Rays, that's a tough gap to overcome.The good news for the Mariners is their current TV deal ? worth a reported $450 million over 10 years ? has an opt-out clause in 2015. So that's their chance for a dramatic increase in rights fees ? although it must be said they can't expect to land an Angels-type deal due to market size.
Another thing I'd consider doing is moving in the fences at Safeco Field, which is an extreme pitchers' park -- to the point that no free-agent hitter is going to sign with the Mariners if he has a relatively equal offer to play elsewhere.
I think that's at least part of the reason why the Mariners pulled the trigger on the Michael Pineda-for-Jesus Montero deal. Unless they develop sluggers of their own, the trade market is the only way for them to go.
General manager Jack Zduriencik has had some hits and misses since taking over, but his track record in drafting and developing talent is solid. He was instrumental in the Brewers' building a contender around homegrown stars Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, Rickie Weeks, Yovani Gallardo, Corey Hart, etc. So there's reason to believe he can do it again in Seattle.

US stocks mixed as Greek bailout talks inch along (AP)
NEW YORK ? Stocks were mixed on Wall Street as Greece inched closer to a deal to resolve its debt crisis.
The Dow Jones industrial average gave up an early gain and was down 12 points at 12,866 around 10 a.m. The Standard & Poor's 500 edged up 3 points to 1,354. The Nasdaq composite rose 15 to 2,947.
Greece is trying to secure loan extensions and other breaks from its lenders ? notably the other euro zone countries and the International Monetary Fund ? so it won't default on debt obligations due next month. The lenders have demanded that Greece cut back on what it spends on pensions and public-sector jobs and other government services, but implementing those cuts has been difficult in a country that has grown used to generous government spending.
The deal-making has been strained and unpredictable. For months, Greece and its lenders have no sooner hammered out one portion of the debt deal before they find something else to agree on. Incremental developments, such as a nod from China that it would continue to invest in some government bonds, commitments from one or two Greek party leaders that they would agree to the cuts, have sent stocks zigzagging up and down, underscoring how desperate investors will latch on to even the smallest signs of good news.
Tuesday night, a meeting between European finance ministers planned for Wednesday was canceled after Athens failed to deliver on several demands made the previous week. On Wednesday, the head of Greece's Conservative party, Antonis Samaras, sent a letter to the country's international creditors committing to the terms of the second international bailout. That news set off a late-day round of stock buying on Wall Street.
Among the biggest movers:

Prosecution ready to wind up preliminary hearing (AP)
ALHAMBRA, Calif. ? A man who masqueraded as a Rockefeller and is now accused of murder was confronted in court Monday by witnesses who said he tried to sell them an Oriental rug with a blood spot.
Christian Gerhartsreiter, who is charged with murdering a San Marino man from whom he had rented a cottage in 1985, smiled slightly at witnesses Robert and Bettie Brown, an elderly couple who once welcomed him into their home for religious study classes and became his close friends.
Gerhartsreiter is charged with killing John Sohus, whose bones were found in 1994 in the backyard of his former home in San Marino, a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles, nearly 10 years after Sohus and his wife vanished.
Gerhartsreiter left town soon after they went missing. He is charged only with killing 27-year-old John Sohus. No sign of Linda Sohus has been found.
Robert Brown testified at a preliminary hearing about a day in 1985 when the man they knew as Chris Chichester showed up at their door with belongings he wanted to sell because he was going on a trip.
Brown said he called his wife to look at a small Oriental rug.
"She looked at it, and said, `Chris, this has blood on it.' He fairly quickly rolled it back up and left with it," Brown said, adding that his wife suggested a place he could take it to be cleaned.
Brown said Chichester, who was then pretending to be an instructor at the University of Southern California's film school, showed up on another occasion asking how to dispose of photo processing chemicals.
Chichester had told the Browns that he was descended from English peerage and was related to a famed British sailor of the same last name. He had also given them tea, saying it came from his family's Indonesian tea plantation.
About a week after the rug incident, Brown said Chichester disappeared, which was not surprising.
"He was something of a phantom. He was different, unusual. He was believable up to a point. You couldn't pin him down on details. Everything was loose and feathery," Brown said.
Another witness filled in the blanks of Gerhartsreiter's travels after he left San Marino. Gerhartsreiter was arrested in Boston in 2008.
Christopher Bishop, an Episcopal priest from Greenwich, Conn., testified that he met the man he knew as Christopher Crowe in 1985 when he appeared at the church where Bishop's father was the priest.
The younger Bishop said he was a film student at Columbia University at the time and his father told him there was a new parishioner who was also involved in film.
Crowe told Bishop that he was the brother of well-known film director Cameron Crowe and had been to film school in California. He said he was in Connecticut to produce the new "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" series, Bishop said.
"Did you believe it?" asked prosecutor Habib Balian.
"Yes," the witness said. "I gave him a screenplay I had written and he had critiqued it. He certainly was conversant in film."
In 1988, Crowe gave Bishop a truck, saying he had used it in a movie and didn't need it anymore. Bishop said he later found out there was a lien on the truck and it had fraudulent license plates. He dumped the truck at a train station, thinking he could get in trouble for it.
"I thought that was going to be the end of the story," Bishop said. "But one day, I was sitting at my parents' house and a Greenwich detective came to the door."
The detective asked about Crowe, saying he was involved in a missing person investigation. Bishop said he later asked Crowe who he really was.
"What was the defendant's response?" Balian asked, to which Bishop replied: "Gotta go, bye."
The truck was later found to be registered to John and Linda Sohus and had disappeared at the time Gerhardsreiter left the house, authorities said.
On the East Coast, Gerhartsreiter had claimed to be Clark Rockefeller, a member of the famous family, and married a woman with whom he had a daughter. She divorced him when she found out he had duped her.
Last year, Gerhartsreiter was convicted of kidnapping his daughter in Boston during a custody dispute. He is serving a four- to five-year prison sentence for that crime.
He would be eligible for parole this year if he was not facing the California charge, which could bring him 26 years to life in prison if he's convicted.
Other witnesses, including Linda Sohus' mother and her best friend, testified about the missing woman's life and the mystery of why she had disappeared. Susan Coffman said she and Sohus were best friends and that she kept a detailed diary of their conversations.
She said Linda Sohus had some unhappy romances before she met and married John Sohus, and that the woman said after the wedding she was happy for the first time.
Coffman testified that in February 1985, Sohus called to say she and her husband had to go to New York briefly for jobs. Both she and Linda Sohus' mother, Susan Mayfield, were told that Linda Sohus planned to be back in two weeks.

The preliminary hearing will determine whether Gerhartsreiter is bound over for trial on the murder charge. The prosecutor estimated the hearing will end Tuesday.
