Netflix for iOS updated with a new player UI, support for alternate language audio

There's still no word available on HD video streaming, but Netflix has just released version 2.2 of its app for iPhones and iPads. While the front end got tablet friendly in December and received a Retina Display makeover in March, this version brings a new player UI to all iOS devices. The new scrub bar seems much easier to reach and control now, while the button for subtitles has a received a tweak reminiscent of the new look recently pushed to Netflix's web based player. Also under that button is a new option allowing for alternate language soundtracks (where available), while the changelog goes on to mention "general performance improvements". Not documented but present is the addition of thumbnails in that scrub bar, easier access to "do not share" for Facebook-connected members and the ability to restrict streaming to WiFi-only in the settings. The new version is shown above, check after the break for a grab of the old player to see the difference. As always, the latest update can be found in the app store, we'll let you know if we hear of any extra details or changes on other platforms.

Marijuana May Relieve Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms ... - Health.am

? Neurology ? ? Tobacco & Marijuana ? May 29, 2012

The advocates of proposition 19, the bill that tried to legalize cannabis in California, must be turning cartwheels at the news coming out of University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. It?s especially ironic coming just a few weeks after the Federal raid and almost complete shutdown of Oaksterdam University, the privately run school in Oakland, California that teaches students how to grow and harvest the much derided herb.

A clinic trial of 30 adult patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis appears to have demonstrated its ability to reduce spasticity and pain, when compared to a placebo.

Multiple Sclerosis is a degenerative disease that affects the lining of the nerve fibers and reduces their ability to transmit properly, a little like an electrical cable with worn insulation. It can also cause ulceration on the brain. Like Parkinson?s and Alzheimer?s it?s a slow and degenerative disease, without a cure, thus the best hope for doctors is finding treatments that reduce symptoms and slow the progression.

The findings of principal investigator Jody Corey-Bloom, MD, PhD, professor of neurosciences and director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at UC San Diego, and her colleagues will be published in Canadian Medical Association Journal this month.

In short, the trial was conducted by dividing the group in two parts, one half smoked placebo cannabis for three days, while the remaining half had the real thing. The scientists then swapped over the supply so the placebo group smoked the real thing and visa versa. The researchers didn?t mention whether or not anyone cheating by scoring their own supplies on top.

Cannabis truly helps multiple sclerosis sufferers

Cannabis may loosen the stiff and spastic muscles of multiple sclerosis sufferers, and not just their minds, a follow-up study has found.

The results contradict findings from the first phase of the study, where improvements seemed to be largely due to ?good moods?.

?There does seem to be evidence of some benefit from cannabis in the longer term that we didn?t anticipate in the short term study,? says John Zajicek, at Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, UK, and one of the research team.

In 2003, Zajicek and his colleagues published results on the largest study to date of cannabinoids and MS. The trial included 630 advanced-stage MS patients who took either cannabinoid compounds or a placebo for 15 weeks.

Compared with those on placebos, patients who received active compounds said they both felt less pain and less muscle spasticity - the spasms characteristic of this neurodegenerative disease.

There have been previous studies that looked into the possibility of treating neurological conditions with cannabis, but they mainly focused on oral treatments, presumably because smoking was considered unhealthy. However, with a recent report showing that cannabis smokers are not affected nearly as badly as tobacco smokers, which has been attributed to its anti inflammatory properties, and taking into account that most people enjoy smoking cannabis far more than they do eating it, this new study makes more sense. There were also reports amongst the pot smoking community that cannabis was seen to relieve symptoms.

Researchers used what is known as the Ashford scale to better assess the intensity of muscle tone by grading resistance in range of motion and rigidity. The secondary study of pain levels was measured using a visual analogue scale. Physical performance was assessed by sending the patients on a timed walk, and they were also questioned about their ?highness? to assess cognitive function.

Corey-Bloom said :

?We found that smoked cannabis was superior to placebo in reducing symptoms and pain in patients with treatment-resistant spasticity, or excessive muscle contractions.?

Although cannabis is generally well tolerated, researchers noted the need for more wide ranging studies over longer time periods. They also commented on the reduced cognitive function on concentration and attention span, and postulate the idea of using lower doses to assess if the same medical results can be achieved with less side effects.

CANNABIS AND MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
An estimated 350,000 people in the United States are living with multiple sclerosis (MS), a debilitating and sometimes fatal disorder of the central nervous system. MS is the most common debilitating neurological disease of young people, often appearing between the ages of 20 and 40, affecting more women than men. Current treatment of MS is primarily symptomatic, focusing on such problems as spasticity, pain, fatigue, bladder problems and depression.

MS is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that manifests due to the immune system attacking the myelin of neurons and dendrites. As the disease progresses, normal neurotransmission is inhibited and such additional symptoms develop as: pain, spasms, spasticity, limb tremor, fatigue, and incontinence. All of the disease symptoms have a large negative impact on the quality of life of MS patients. MS most frequently presents at onset as a relapsing and remitting disorder, where symptoms come and go.

MS exacerbations appear to be caused by abnormal immune activity that causes inflammation and the destruction of myelin (the protective covering of nerve fibers) in the brain or spinal cord. After repeated attack from the immune system, nerves lose plasticity, which creates stress in nerve tissue.

This stress leaves nerve tissue vulnerable to progressive damage and death.

Although symptom-specific treatments exist, these are often associated with adverse side effects.

This has prompted many people who suffer from MS to seek alternative therapies. Cannabinoids, the active ingredients in cannabis, have demonstrated the ability to control aspects of MS disease progression.

Anecdotal reports on the self medication of cannabis to treat MS are supported by recent advances in the understanding of the biology of cannabis and the cannabinoid receptors.

Controlled studies have found that cannabis and cannabinoids can control such symptoms as pain, spasms, spasticity, and incontinence.?

The leading effects of prolonged neurodegeneration in MS cause permanent disabilities. This neurodenergation has yet to be effectively treated.

Initial neurodegeneration occurs with inflammation, cannabis and cannabinoids have been shown to have neuroprotective effects during immune attacks on the CNS.

This is the fifth cannabis study in a row from University of California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research to show positive results in treating neuropathic pain. We can only hope that the Feds are not planning to raid the facility for promoting an illegal drug, as they did in Oakland.

Igor Grant, MD, director of the CMCR, which provided funding for the study concluded:

?The study by Corey Bloom and her colleagues adds to a growing body of evidence that cannabis has therapeutic value for selected indications, and may be an adjunct or alternative for patients whose spasticity or pain is not optimally managed.?

(AP) ? Former Prime Minister Tony Blair said Monday that he couldn't stand up to the Britain's media tycoons while in power, telling an official media ethics inquiry that doing so could have dragged his administration into a political quagmire.

Blair's testimony, briefly interrupted by a heckler who burst into the courtroom to call him a war criminal, shed light on the canny media strategy used to create the "New Labour" image that repackaged his party as more mainstream and business friendly, bringing it back to power after 18 years in opposition.

Blair, who was premier from 1997 to 2007, enjoyed strong press support in his early years, including backing from media mogul Rupert Murdoch's influential newspapers. But he found himself isolated near the end of his decade in power due in large part to his unpopular decision to join the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The greying ex-prime minister said he long had concerns about what he once described as the "feral beasts" of the media but had to tread carefully where press barons were concerned.

"I took a strategic decision to manage these people, not confront them," he told Lord Justice Brian Leveson, who is leading the inquiry. "I didn't say that I feared them ... (but) had you decided to confront them, everything would have been pushed to the side. It would have been a huge battle with no guarantee of winning."

Leveson's inquiry was set up following revelations of phone hacking at Murdoch's News of the World tabloid, a scandal which has rocked the British establishment and raised questions about whether top politicians helped shield Murdoch ? and the media in general ? from official scrutiny.

Blair's time at the top has come under particular scrutiny because of the unlikely ? and mutually beneficial ? alliance the media-savvy prime minister forged between his left-wing Labour Party and Murdoch's News Corp. ? a company whose holdings include the populist The Sun newspaper and the right-wing Fox News network.

Blair became so friendly with Murdoch that he was chosen to be the godfather to one of Murdoch's children. The Blair government's relationship with Murdoch has since been described by several former colleagues as having been too close for comfort.

The former prime minister made no apologies for courting Murdoch, saying he was just one of several media tycoons who could make life difficult if they weren't happy with a position he was taking.

He denied doing any kind of deal with Murdoch, "either express or implied" ? although he acknowledged calling the Australian-American tycoon ahead of elections to make sure that Labour could count on News Corp.'s support.

Blair's testimony was interrupted when a heckler burst in through a secure corridor behind Leveson, shouting: "This man should be arrested for war crimes!" before being removed by security. British media reported that the heckler, who identified himself as filmmaker David Lawley Wakelin, had previously heckled Blair over the 2003 invasion of Iraq at a televised question and answer session.

Such incidents ? a testament to the divisiveness of Blair's decision to go to war in Iraq ? are routine. Last week, a handful of protesters yelling out "warmonger" interrupted his speech at Colby College in Maine.

Blair, wearing a navy suit and sporting a tan, watched impassively. Leveson, looking ruffled, said he would investigate how the man managed to sneak in to the restricted area.

Wakelin ? who was released without charge ? later told London radio that he took advantage of an unguarded door in the maze-like Royal Courts of Justice, where the inquiry is being held.

Blair spent a considerable amount of time challenging the reputation his lieutenants built up for bullying, manipulation, and "spin" in his decade in office.

Still, he acknowledged that politics and media had become "far more rude and brutal ? and in a sense crude ? in its interaction."

Blair's appearance kicked off an important week at the judge-led inquiry. Current ministers, including Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Education Minister Michael Gove and Home Secretary Theresa May, are due to testify in the coming days.

Prime Minister David Cameron is also expected to testify before Leveson, whose inquiry was set up last year after it emerged that reporters at the Murdoch-owned News of the World tabloid had routinely hacked into the phones of public figure and crime victims.

The scandal has rocked Britain's establishment, leading to the arrest or resignation of dozens of journalists, media executives, political operatives and police, prison and military officials. It's also exposed a pattern of wrongdoing across the British press, from bribery to blackmail.

The investigation continues: As Blair was testifying, police said they'd arrested a 42-year-old woman who was not identified on suspicion of money laundering offenses linked to the hacking scandal. She was later released on bail.

Problems with your Pet or Animal? An Animal Psychic Can Help!

A friend of mine purchased a new puppy about 6 months ago, and began the long process of training and house-breaking him. He had followed tips from books, professional trainers, and other dog owners, but his dog was still having some serious behavioural problems. I suggested he take him to an animal psychic.

Animal Psychics, or communicators, are able to communicate with your pets telepathically, in the same manner most psychics use to communicate with humans. You may be wishing you could talk to your pets to understand their obedience problems, why they always seem sad or aggressive, or even to learn more about health problems your animal may be experiencing that are not responding well to veterinary treatment. Or, you may be wishing to speak to a deceased or missing pet.

There are two types of animal communicators:

Pet Psychics for Living Animals

When an animal is misbehaving, he is not usually doing that just to spite you ? there is generally a reason behind such behaviour. While you may think that you understand your animal very well, there is a possibility that he doesn?t understand you. Or, he may be feeling unwell, or be depressed about experiences in his life before he came into your care. Pet psychic Sonya Fitzpatrick talks about a dog whose deliberate accidents were directly linked to the dogs dislike for its owner?s new boyfriend. Without an animal communicator, the owner never would have known the cause, and the battle between pet and owner could have gone on forever.

If you?re not fully convinced of the power of these communicators, you may want to listen to some remarkable, heart-warming stories from David Louis pet psychic as he tells about his communications with all types of animals. From porcupines, to horses, and of course dogs and cats ? David Louis is able to communicate with just about any type of animal. He talks about a dog who only needed to know his owner loved him in order to pass his doggy boot camp field trials, and the story of how a miniature horse in captivity shared with David, his dreams of living in a wide open field with other horses.h

Mediums for Deceased and Missing Animals

Animal communicators are not only for the living. There are Animal Mediums out there as well who are able to cross over to the other side to speak with your deceased pet. Did your animal die without a chance for you to say good bye? Do you have some unanswered questions you wish you could have known about your animal?s life and feelings while it was living? Do you want to know why he was always so afraid of people? Or answer any other strange behavioural issues your animal had? These communicators can help.

David Louis tells a remarkable story of how a deceased cat gave a message to her previous owner not to feel guilty about her death. This particular cat had awoken her owner by scratching at his bedroom door because there was a massive fire burning through the house. Her owner ? a young teenager ? had left his cigarettes burning when he went to bed which caused the fire. He escaped through an upstairs window, but the cat was left to perish inside. The young boy had been carrying this guilt around for years, and this cat had contacted David Louis so that David could let the young boy know that she was at peace with her death ? that she considers it an excellent life-lesson for the young boy, and he should not feel any more guilt.

Not all communicators deal with the deceased, but the ones that do will often be able to help you find a missing pet as well. While psychics work off energies and auras, these mediums are able to reach further, and therefore aid you in finding your lost animals.

Animal Communicator or Pet Psychic Is The Answer

If you are experiencing behavioural problems, communication problems, have a lost or deceased pet that you need to reach, you should think about reaching out to an animal communicator. Finding a live person in your area with such skills may be a difficult task, but fortunately there are many pet psychics operating via phone or web consultations. Some radio shows and websites offer free pet psychic advice, but the time slots can be limited, and it may be a good idea to book a full time slot with a professional communicator if you really want to receive detailed feedback about your beloved pet.

While there has been no recorded evidence of any real-life ?Dr. Doolittle?s? to this day, these psychics and mediums are probably as close as you are going to get, and they can be very helpful in resolving issues with your pets and animals, and making your lives together even more enjoyable.

Egyptian voters will choose from polar opposites in presidential runoff

Egyptian officials announced today that Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, and Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, will face each other in a June runoff.

The official announcement, which cannot be appealed, finalizes what many had suspected since votes were tallied Friday in Egypt?s first presidential election after a popular uprising pushed Mr. Mubarak from power. Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood?s candidate, and Ahmed Shafiq, a member of Mubarak?s former regime, will advance to a runoff in mid-June. Out of a field of 13 candidates, Dr. Morsi?received?nearly 25 percent of the vote, while Mr. Shafiq garnered 24 percent.

The election commission overseeing the vote said that about 46 percent of more than 50 million registered voters participated in the election. The commission also denied the appeals filed by several runner-up candidates, who alleged that fraud and violations had affected the results.

But the legal drama is not yet over: Egypt?s high constitutional court has yet to rule on a law passed by parliament that bans members of Mubarak?s regime from politics. Shafiq was disqualified under the new law, but the election commission reinstated his candidacy. Adding to the complications, the constitutional court is not expected to give the final word on the issue until just before the second round of voting.

Some Egyptians are upset that the two most polarizing candidates advanced to the next round with only a quarter of the vote each, while about half of those who voted cast ballots for neither one. Morsi and Shafiq have already begun maneuvering to woo those who voted for other candidates, particularly the non-Islamist ?revolutionaries,? many of whom reject both candidates.

Shafiq, who was prime minister as Mubarak tried to quell the uprising, and who has expressed his admiration of his former boss and his disdain for the revolution, changed his tune in a press conference Saturday. He addressed the young activists who sparked the revolution, saying, ?your revolution was stolen,? and pledging to return it to them.

Morsi, meanwhile, has called for meetings with the third- and fourth-place candidates, both of whom are seen as pro-revolution figures, in an apparent attempt to gain their support in the next round. Members of the Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice Party have called on political forces to rally around Morsi to defeat the old regime.

Negotiations with other parties or coalitions will be difficult, however, given the promises the Brotherhood has broken over the past year, says Mustapha Kamel Al Sayyid, a political science professor at the American University in Cairo.

?They say something, but they do the opposite, and this does not encourage confidence in their promise,? says Dr. Sayyid. Over the past year, the Brotherhood went back on its pledge to contest only?30 percent of parliamentary seats, broke a promise not to run a presidential candidate, and sought to dominate the committee formed to write a new constitution, after pledging to make it an inclusive process.

Omni Health & Fitness Sites Earn Medical Fitness Association

Franciscan Omni Health and Fitness Schererville and Chesterton locations have become among only about 30 in the world to become certified as medical fitness facilities by national Medical Fitness Association.

"This certification process is a significant step forward in the health of the entire community and to the individuals taking responsibility for their personal health care," the association said, adding, "This program is the first and only certification offered facilities in the medical fitness industry, which serves more than four million members worldwide."

Certification follows an in-depth review of a facility's adherence to prescribed standards and guidelines and is recognized as a mark of excellence in the industry, according to the association.

Sharon Sporman, Omni regional executive director, termed the certification a great honor. "The process itself has increased awareness of our staff as we have raised the bar in establishing higher standards of service, safety and results-oriented programs for our membership and communities. Thanks to our staff in this achievement and to Ryan Svenstrup in helping to guide the ship in the application process."

The not-for-profit association says its purpose is to lead in the development and operational success of medically integrated fitness centers and affect the global continuum of care by providing research, industry standards, operational guidelines, educational programming, benchmarking, outcome measurements, professional development and networking opportunities.

Omni Health and Fitness locations are under the auspices of Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Dyer and Hammond (Schererville) and Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Michigan City (Chesterton).

Dr. James Callaghan, Franciscan St. Anthony Health president, said, "Obtaining this certification demonstrates our Franciscan Omni centers' commitment to the overall health of our patients. We take care of patients at all levels of fitness pursuits, whether one is recovering from a heart attack, or training for a marathon."

Gene Diamond, CEO of Franciscan Alliance Northern Indiana hospitals, said the certification is the latest step in a process designed to provide a full range of state-of-the-art health and wellness capabilities for members.?"We're proud that our leaders and staff have risen to the challenge. We invite community residents to stop by, sign up and join in the fun," he added.

Tom Gryzbek, Franciscan St. Margaret Health president, said, "The MFA certification is another validation of the quality services and programs offered at our Franciscan Omni Centers. We are proud of our staff as they provide support and resources to all wanting to work to improve or maintain their current state of health and well-being."

4 Reasons to Promote Your Blog on Facebook and Twitter

This may come as a surprise but a lot of people hesitate when it comes to blog promotion on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Sometimes it?s because they don?t want certain people to know about their blog, other times it?s because they don?t want to look like they?re spamming up their friends and followers feeds, and sometimes it just comes down to the fact that they don?t know how or even realize that they should be doing so. However not using Facebook and Twitter for your blog promotion is a massive mistake. Here are four reasons you need to use Facebook and Twitter for marketing your blog:

1. More exposure: It?s pretty simple really. You post your latest blog posts on Facebook and Twitter and more people are going to click on the link to read them. You can?t leave all of it to chance and people finding you through search engines because, unless you?re a mastermind with keywords and SEO, increased traffic just isn?t going to happen as quickly as when you?re promoting on these two sites.
2. New connections: Having a social media site to promote your blog gives you the opportunity to form new connections with readers and bloggers alike. You are able to interact with them in a way that your blog on its own doesn?t afford, which deepens the relationship and gives you a more loyal audience. Both of these are vital to the success of your blog.
3. Better search engine indexing: Tweeting out links to your new posts or sharing the links on Facebook means that your posts are in more places around the web. The more places there are linking to your posts, the more likely it is that the major search engines like Google or Yahoo are going to index your posts. Better indexing means more people finding your blog through searches. More people finding your blog equal more traffic. It?s an all-around win.
4. Both offer unique audiences: It?s unlikely that you have the exact same audience on both your Facebook and Twitter accounts, so promoting your blog in both places means that it will reach more people. Because Twitter allows you to include hashtags, you are going to reach a broader audience that extends past people that are already following you. And because people can share posts they like on Facebook it opens up the door for new people finding your blog all the time. Facebook and Twitter are two of the biggest social media websites available. Not taking advantage of them for promoting your blog is just passing up a free opportunity to reach more people. So use it! You?re only hurting your blog by not.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) ? Lady Gaga canceled her sold-out show in Indonesia after Islamist hard-liners threatened violence, claiming her sexy clothes and provocative dance moves would corrupt the youth.

The controversy was a blow to the predominantly Muslim country's reputation for combining free speech and democracy with a mostly moderate brand of the faith.

Fans were devastated, despite the promoter's offer of full refunds. Some accused police ? who refused to issue a permit over concerns about security ? of buckling to the will of a small group of thugs.

The planned "Born This Way Ball" concert has been on-again-off-again from the start.

But on Sunday, it was final, said Minola Sebayang, a lawyer for Big Daddy, the promoter of the June 3 show.

"It's unfortunate," he said. "But with threats if the concert goes ahead, Lady Gaga's side is calling it off. This is not only about Lady Gaga's security, but extends to those who will be watching her."

Indonesia, a secular nation of 240 million, is often held up by the U.S. and others an example of how democracy and Islam and can coexist. In many ways they are right. Since emerging from dictatorship just over a decade ago, sweeping reforms have resulted in direct elections, while vastly improving human rights and freeing up the media.

But a small extremist fringe has become more vocal ? and violent ? in recent years, attacking Christians and members of other religious minorities, transvestites, atheists and anyone else deemed immoral.

The most notorious group, Islamic Defenders Front, called Lady Gaga a "messenger of the devil" and vowed to turn out at the airport by the thousands if she tried to step off the plane. Others said they bought tickets so they could wreak havoc from inside the 52,000-seat stadium in the capital, Jakarta.

Police responded by denying the necessary permits. Then, after public outcry, they said they'd reconsider ? but only if Lady Gaga agreed to tone down her act.

Instead, she pulled the plug on what was supposed to be the biggest stop on her Asian tour.

Michael Rusli, head of Big Daddy, promised "Little Monster" fans full refunds.

But that provided little consolation to people like 25-year-old Johnny Purba.

"This only shows to the world how weak security forces are in this country, how police are afraid of a bunch of hard-liners," he said.

"Gaga's two-hour show will not hurt Indonesian Muslims. For God's sake, she is not a terrorist!"

Around 50 others, dressed up like the pop diva, performed a mob flash dance at a shopping mall in Jakarta to some of her biggest hits.

Hard-liners, however, were ecstatic.

"This is a victory for Indonesian Muslims," said Salim Alatas, one of the leaders of the Islamic Defenders Front. "Thanks to God for protecting us from a kind of devil."

Earlier, Murhali Barda, a spokesman for the group, said supporters had purchased more than 150 tickets to the concert.

He posted a picture on his Facebook page of a man hiding his identity with a turban and sunglasses and holding a $50 ticket to the "Ball."

"We have gotten Lady Gaga tickets," the caption said. "Not to watch but for us to enter."

"Our target is to stop the concert," he wrote, providing little more detail. "We would force them off the stage but not harm the audience."

Beckham, LA fall short in latest?loss

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:47 p.m. ET May 26, 2012

HOUSTON (AP) - Andre Hainault's goal in the 57th minute gave the Houston Dynamo a 2-1 victory over David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday.

Hainault scored to break a 1-all game on a header off a corner kick by Brad Davis. He headed the ball from the near post to the inside far post for the winner in a game played in temperatures that topped 90 degrees.

"We knew they were tired," Hainault said. "We did the right things. We kept the ball as much as we could. The game came down to set pieces, we know they are important, and that is what happened today. We held on. We defended well. We are tired, but we are happy."

Coach Dominic Kinnear gave credit to his team for coming back after falling behind early.

"It was a great goal by Andre," Kinnear said. "It was a little bit of luck getting back into the game. Great ball by Brad, Andre attacked it well. Three points is what we came here for and three points is what we got."

The win extended Houston's unbeaten streak to four, while Los Angeles is winless in seven in a row and has lost three straight by one goal each.

Los Angeles coach Bruce Arena said the Galaxy were trying to conserve energy by not running the length of the field. Game time temperature was 91 degrees, with no wind at field level.

"The pace of the game changed because of the conditions," Arena said. "The players are not able to play at a high pace under these conditions for a long time. No one is made to play in this heat for 90 minutes."

The Galaxy took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Edson Buddle in the 10th minute. Houston tied it in the 38th minute on an own goal by LA's Mike Magee. A shot by Houston's Brian Ching went off the crossbar, then bounced off Magee in front of the goalmouth and into the net.

Beckham missed two good scoring chances. A 30-yard free kick in the 51st minute was knocked over the crossbar by goalie Tally Hall, and his 25-yard free kick in the 83rd minute also was knocked away by Hall.

"It is disappointing considering we started the game so well," Beckham said. "We knew it was going to be difficult considering the time of the kickoff and the heat."

Beckham showed frustration throughout the game, especially in the second half. He said the frustration was geared toward referee Silviu Petrescu.

"I don't think the referee could get any worse than our last game," Beckham said. "I shouldn't say too much because I don't want to get myself in trouble. The standard isn't good enough. It's that simple."

Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane did not play for the Galaxy; Geoff Cameron missed the game for the Dynamo.

Blue light tells plants when to flower

Protein that marks day length also coordinates blooming genes

Web edition : Friday, May 25th, 2012

As the days become longer in spring, plants know to bloom thanks to an interaction between several crucial proteins and blue light, scientists report in the May 25 Science. The new work describes the molecular mechanics that enables a light-sensitive protein to help switch on a suite of genes that control flowering. Understanding the biology of how plants regulate flowering could be useful for tweaking crops to start producing food earlier in the year.

?We might be able to grow three times or twice as much in a season,? says study coauthor Takato Imaizumi, a molecular biologist at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Generally, plants need to start blooming around the time when most pollinating insects will be buzzing around ? such as in early spring ? to maximize their chances of reproducing.Scientists have known that plants have higher levels of the blue-light sensitive protein FKF1 toward the end of the day and that the protein is important for tracking day length. It?s also been shown that another protein, called CO, plays a key role in turning on flowering genes.

In the new work, Imaizumi and his team looked at the flowering plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The researchers show that FKF1 helps stabilize the CO protein long enough to turn on flowering. Blue light ? a particular wavelength of visible light that is common in sunlight that shines down at the end of a spring day, around the same time there is more FKF1 ? enhances the interaction. FKF1 also lowers levels of a protein that normally serves as a brake on blooming.

Rome's Airport - Still Dead on Arrivals

I was pleased to hear that London's dreaded Terminal 5 received the world's accolades for being 'The Best Airport on Earth', especially after its missteps on opening (and even more unthinkable closings due to a few inches of snow this winter). ?Nonetheless, people love it.
I was tickled pink when just a few days after that disastrous opening, Rome's airport crowned their own international terminal, Terminal 5.? Simply put, it's a holding pen for people going to the USA where they can go thru U.S. "security", one of the biggest jokes in the age of aviation. [But that's another story - although as a serious frequent flyer who works for our govt put it to me on the plane over to the USA, 'the TSA is terrific about going after yesterday's perpetrators...']
Anyway, my Rome airport experience last week reminded me just how unfathomable it is to witness how we can shuttle people in a tube through the air, but can't get them in and around airports.
It started with the (much lauded, by yours truly) new signage over at Rome's airport. The ADR (Rome Airport Authority) has really made progress in devising ways to streamline traffic so you don't feel so much like a rat in a maze by the time you get to security. ?Upon our approach, we were thrilled to find a sort of 'short cut' posted to Terminal 5. ?Naturally, the TERMINAL 5:?NEXT RIGHT arrow led over to the Cargo Terminal; the correct language being, SECOND RIGHT: but hey, who's counting?!
Rejoicing in our agility in averting the cement outpost while rounding that first roundabout, I started to think better of it. ?I suspected there'd be another 8-way roundabout and we'd probably be left hanging as to which way to go. ?But before I could finish my "Rome Auditorium theory of sign-posting"?, there we were. ?We went round and round the roundabout a few times, before determining that the Terminal would not be where one might think it should be. ?And eureka!?we followed that hunch right up to the front door.

I made my way to the third line: x-ray screening. It was my lucky day, because just as I passed through those pearly gates; barefoot and my tablet carefully held against my torso?(and feeling a bit like Moses), the power went out in the entire terminal. ?I looked back to find in my wake ever-growing lines, elevators and escalators ground to a halt. ?People in wheelchairs sat gathering like ducks in a pond, wondering just how they would make it up to the shuttle. ?I gave a little skip of delight at my good fortune and went headed for the terminal.

Incredibly, there was no back-up generator to allow the airport to carry on with their business. ?That is, the business of pushing people through to their destinations. ?But once inside the terminal, I found that business was brisk: it just had nothing to do with the travel industry. ?All of the shops, despite the black-out, were lit up, cash registers ringing like Las Vegas slot machines. ?Travelers may be stuck down in security, but up here, the cash was flowing freely.?
Little by little, hundreds of flyers made their way in, to now wait out the delays due to the black-out. ?In waiting rooms that seated 24 people per gate. ?The immense transfer desk takes up enough room for 200, and I've only ever seen it staffed by two. ?The crowding just to get down your gangway was nothing short of a run on banks in modern Greece. ?
Finally elbowing my way onto the plane, people joked how boarding in Rome was not unlike driving through Italy. Perhaps when it comes to transportation, it's the only way we've been accustomed to doing things.

My next post: ?coming to America and the terminal (illness) of food culture USA.
