Exploding dinosaur hypothesis implodes
ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? The pregnant ichthyosaur female from Holzmaden (Germany) that perished 182 million years ago puzzled researchers for quite some time: The skeleton of the extinct marine reptile is almost immaculately preserved and the fossilized bones of the mother animal lie largely in their anatomical position. The bones of the ichthyosaur embryos, however, are a different story: For the most part, they lie scattered outside the body of the mother. Such peculiar bone arrangements are repeatedly found in ichthyosaur skeletons. According to the broadly accepted scientific doctrine, this is the result of exploding carcasses: Putrefaction gases produced during the decomposition process cause the carcass to swell and burst. Through such explosions, even the bones of embryos can supposedly be ejected out of the body.
Based on an elaborate series of measurements and an analysis of the physical-biological parameters, however, a research team of sedimentologists, paleontologists and forensic scientists has now managed to dispel the myth of exploding dinosaur carcasses.
Putrefaction gas pressure not high enough
In order to gauge the pressure of the particular gases that can actually develop inside a putrefying ichthyosaur, the researchers sought comparative models and found one in human corpses: Humans and many ichthyosaur species have a similar size range. Consequently, the formation of similar amounts of putrefaction gas can be expected during decomposition. At the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Frankfurt, Germany, a manometer was inserted into the abdominal cavity through the umbilicus in one hundred corpses.The putrefaction gas pressures measured were only 0.035 bar. In the case of the ichthyosaur carcasses that came to rest below 50 to 150 meters of water, however, putrefaction gas pressures of over five to 15 bar would have been necessary to cause an explosion. According to Zurich paleontologist Christian Klug, gas pressures of this dimension and therefore actual explosions are impossible: "Large vertebrates that decompose cannot act as natural explosive charges." And he is convinced: "Our results can be extended to lung-breathing vertebrates in general."
What actually happened 182 million years ago
According to the researchers, the fate of ichthyosaur carcasses can be reconstructed as follows: Normally, the bodies sank to the seabed immediately post mortem. In very deep, hospitable waters, they were broken down completely through putrefaction,scavengers, bone-destroying organisms and dissolving processes. In shallower water (up to 50 meters) and a temperature of over four degrees Celsius, however, the corpses often rose back to the surface on account of the putrefaction gases accumulating inside the body. At the surface, exposed to the waves and scavengers, they decomposed within anything from a few days to weeks and the bones were scattered over a wide area on the seabed as they sank.
Ichthyosaur skeletons only remained preserved more or less in their anatomical position under very special circumstances: A lack of oxygen, medium water depths and insignificant bottom water currents. Because only then were the putrefaction gases compressed strongly enough through the high water pressure and dissolved in the bodily fluids, and the carcasses not completely broken down due to a lack of scavengers. The carcass of the ichthyosaur female from Holzmaden thus sank to the bottom of the sea, which was up to 150 meters deep, where it decomposed. In doing so, the decomposed embryo skeletons were transported out of the body of the mother by minor currents at the seabed.

LONDON (AP) ? Scotland Yard's communications chief resigned Thursday, the third senior police figure to part with his job over the force's failure to come to grips with Britain's phone hacking scandal.
Dick Fedorcio stepped down after the force decided he would face disciplinary proceedings over a contract awarded to a former executive at Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid. The Independent Police Complaints Commission ruled that Fedorcio had to answer questions over the decision to hire Neil Wallis, the former News of the World executive later arrested on suspicion of breaking into voicemails.
The links between senior members of the News of the World and Scotland Yard have come under particularly close scrutiny because both organizations insisted for years that there was no evidence of widespread phone hacking at the tabloid.
Those assurances fell apart after it emerged that journalists at the paper routinely broke into the phones of celebrities and other public figures to score scoops or get leverage. Three parallel police inquiries, a cascade of lawsuits, and a judge-led inquiry have since lifted the lid on a host of illegal practices, from large-scale bribery to computer hacking.
The scandal's fallout has shaken Britain's establishment. The News of the World has been shut, the country's press watchdog has been scrapped, and dozens of journalists, executives, and public officials have either resigned, been suspended or been arrested over their role in the scandal.
Among them are former Scotland Yard chief Paul Stephenson and ex-Assistant Commissioner John Yates, both of whom resigned in July. Fedorcio's decision was announced Thursday, but he'd been on extended leave since August.
Politicians also have been drawn into the scandal. Kit Malthouse, London's deputy mayor for policing and crime, was asked why he had challenged police about the resources they were pouring into the phone hacking investigation.
Malthouse, called before the judge-led inquiry on Thursday, defended his skepticism, saying that the phone hacking investigation is projected to draw in some 200 people by 2013.
"That's the equivalent of eight murder squads," he said.

Video Game Review: Tetris Battle
Summary Judgement: Though not without its flaws, Tetris Battle is one of the few facebook games I?ve seen that is actually a?game.
In previous posts I?ve made my position on ?Social? gaming quite clear. To summarize: ?Social? gaming can be viewed through a lens of Marxism in that it alienates gamers from play through repetitive actions/faux-stimuli, which simulate assembly line mentalities.
To put it more bluntly, ?Social? gaming sucks the devil?s ass.
Tetris Battle does not change that rule. Rather it stands as an exception, therein.
On some levels, it seems identical to every other facebook game out there. To start, there are two types of in-game money: Tetris coins and Tetris cash. Everybody collects the former at the end of a match; while the latter is a premium currency that the game miserly doles out after leveling up. T$ can also be acquired through through real world transactions, or engaging with the game?s sponsors. Also similar to every other facebook/Free2Play game out there, Tetris Cash unlocks game play advantages (faster movement speed on the pieces, additional blocks in the upcoming queue, etc.) more rapidly than if a player uses the generic Tetris coins.
Under normal circumstances, those reasons would be more than enough to make me hate this game. Yet there?s one thing that Tetris Battle offers that so many other online games do not: actual player on player competition where somebody wins, and somebody loses.
Regular Tetris is about building solid lines out of falling shapes. The core of Tetris Battle, however, involves sending cleared lines into an opponent?s matrix. Clear two lines, and send one to a foe. Score a triple to send a pair of lines into an enemy?s grid. Landing a tetris forces a rival to deal with four unwelcome lines. There are additional ways to make a player?s life miserable through chaining together single line clearances, advanced T-spin lines and clearing a matrix of all blocks. Rounds last two minutes with a winner determined through most lines sent and fewest matrices filled. Save for the ability to ?hold? a piece for future use, something that I have used to rain back to back tetri on my unworthy opponents, all other standard rules of Tetris apply.
But what of fairness within a game environment where those with the deepest wallets can buy the most advantages? Setting aside the obvious fact that Free2Play games are a microcosm for the world in that respect, the game does two things to keep the playing field level. First, the advantages that it gives out aren?t that big of a deal. In theory, it is nice to know the next five pieces in the drop order. But who is really going to make 100% use of that knowledge? Unless you?re an expert level chess player who happens to be tweaking on Crystal Meth, the average person doesn?t have the cognitive ability or reaction time to think five moves ahead while engaged in a fast paced competition of spatial relations.
The other thing that keeps Tetris Battle?s competition on an even keel is its match making system. The game employs an efficient ranking structure that ensures a similar skill level between players. From time to time, I have engaged in the odd outlier match against. There was this one South Korean opponent who pasted me 72 lines to 12. But for the most part, the system gets it right far more often than it fouls things up.
As of this review, the game is lacking a grudge match system where friends can throw down with other friends. A greyed out ?Challenge? option on the game?s main screen suggests said option might be in the works for future updates. Speaking of things that are missing, the iconic Tetris music isn?t there. Instead, the game offers some mellow lounge/elevator music during each round. Tetrisbattle.com brags that this game is an officially licensed product, so I have no idea why they wouldn?t deploy half of what makes Tetris so memorable?
Overall, Tetris Battle is a pretty positive experience. Judicious use Tetris Cash will avert the need to spam friends with thousands of requests to help unlock additional game play modes. That little detail in and of itself is a huge selling point for me. There?s nothing I hate more than having to beg for my friends? attention because I want to play a game on my own. Alerting the world to a need for extra pickles in Hamburger City, or whatever, is probably the most tacky part of the entire ?social? gaming experience. For that reason alone Tetris Battle is worth of your attention.
And now, for no particular reason, the best ever orchestral rendition of the Tetris theme.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) ? Generations of Navajo families have grazed livestock on a remote but spectacular mesa that overlooks the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers. This is the East Rim of the majestic Grand Canyon ? the last with no significant development.
But ancestral tradition and the tranquility of the landscape could be subject to change if the Navajo government's plans are realized for a resort and aerial tramway that would ferry tourists from cliff tops to water's edge.
The vast 27,000 square-mile Navajo reservation abuts Grand Canyon National Park, and tribal leaders say they're losing out on tourist dollars and jobs for their people by leaving the land undeveloped. Navajo President Ben Shelly recently signed a nonbinding agreement that lists the gondola, a restaurant, a half-mile river walk, a resort hotel and spa and RV park among the attractions of a proposed development that he says will bring up to $70 million a year in revenue to the tribe and 2,000 jobs to the impoverished reservation.
"We want people from all over the world to visit Navajo land and the Grand Canyon," Shelly said. "We have many of the world's wonders in our midst."
True enough, but the National Park Service already is voicing objections to the large-scale development on its eastern flank. Environmental organizations and some Navajos who call the area home also oppose the project.
"This is just one more thing that is going to chip away at the solitude of the area, and it's really not the appropriate type of development for that area," said Alicyn Gitlin of the Sierra Club.
Similar proposals for a tramway that would take tourists from the East Rim to the river have been opposed by the local community of Bodaway-Gap. They oppose the scale and character of the current plan and want more say in what could be built there.
The confluence, as locals call it, is a 100-mile drive off Interstate 40 from Flagstaff off a rough dirt road. Sagebrush, rolling hills, arroyos, canyons and desert mark the landscape where the Colorado meets the blue-green waters of the Little Colorado. It's mostly quiet, save for the occasional helicopter tour over the Grand Canyon or the shouts from river rafters below.
The land has remained undeveloped for decades because of a land dispute between the Navajos and the neighboring Hopi tribe, both of which claimed aboriginal ties to it. A construction ban implemented by former U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs Robert Bennett imposed a ban on home and land improvements in 1966. It was lifted in 2009, though little development has occurred on the 700,000 acres.
The western edge of the Grand Canyon outside the national park boundaries belongs to the Hualapai Tribe, which has a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that juts out 70 feet over the canyon's edge and gives tourists a view of the Colorado River 4,000 feet below. Most people visiting the Grand Canyon go to the South Rim within the national park. The North Rim, also within the park, is less developed, but has a seasonal lodge.
The memorandum of agreement that Shelly signed with the Confluence Partners, LLC., on Feb. 21 doesn't state the impacts of a development on the East Rim. But a member of the negotiating team, Deswood Tome, said the tribal government expects 3 million visitors a year as soon as 2015 and revenue to be between $40 million and $70 million annually ? up to a half of the tribe's budget not including federal funds.
No one lives at the overlook to the confluence but about a handful of people live nearby, and other families have said they want to move back since the construction ban ended. There is no water or electricity at the site and putting in the infrastructure would cost at least $60 million alone, which Tome said also could benefit residents. About 27 miles of dirt road would have to be paved to reach the site, and water would have to be piped in from miles away.
At full build-out, the project could approach $1 billion, said Lamar Whitmer, of the Confluence Partners, LLC.
The tram would run from the East Rim and parallel the Colorado River before coming to a stop at the bottom of the canyon, where a restaurant would be located. A half-mile river walk, also running alongside the Colorado River, would give tourists a view of the confluence but stop short of it. The resort hotel and spa, other hotels, and commercial and retail space would be located on top of the canyon.
The proposed attractions could create a jurisdictional dispute, depending on their distance from the Colorado River. The Navajos believe the reservation extends to the high water mark of the Colorado River, while the National Park Service says its boundary is a quarter-mile from the river's bank along the 61-mile stretch of the Colorado before it meets the Little Colorado.
Grand Canyon park officials also want to maintain the wilderness characteristics of the East Rim, which is popular with backcountry hikers and not easily accessible, and make sure endangered species like the humpback chub are protected, said park Superintendent Dave Uberuaga. Environmental groups say the noise and light pollution would be unwelcome.
"It's not Disneyland," said Lynn Hamilton of the Grand Canyon River Guides, a canyon advocacy and environmental group. "It's one of the seven natural wonders of the world. To mar that somehow with such commercialism right there, in your face would just seem contrary to what the value of Grand Canyon is."
Environmentalists applauded the Navajo government for throwing out plans for an airport, verbally at least, though it remains in the written agreement.
Shelly has vowed to protect sacred sites, and although he initially opposed any development at the confluence, his spokesman says it is one of the premier locations on the reservation to draw tourist dollars. But the tribe still must pursue land and leases from a community that appears largely opposed.
This is what Tyrone Tsosie called his backyard as a child. He recalled his grandmother taking him out to the confluence and showing him how to use corn pollen ? a staple of Navajo tradition ? to pray to the rivers for blessings. Yucca root, white flowers and sage that grow there also are used for traditional and medicinal purposes, he said.
"The main thing right now for my generation, we don't want that kind of change, development out there because we don't want to lose that scenery and lose all those memories," said Tsosie, who no longer lives in the area.
Said Tome, "We're not always going to have 100 percent agreement, but we're going to do our part to bring development and jobs here to Navajo."

A recent security report warned of malware networks ("malnets") "lurking within Google and other search engines, driving unsuspecting Web surfers to sites where they might share their personal or financial information to unintended parties," wrote msnbc.com's?Athima Chansanchai, in sharing the findings from Blue Coat Systems 2012 Security Report.
"Choose your allies carefully ? Katniss Everdeen wouldn?t trust the people trying to defeat her, and neither should you," said Norton. "Cybercriminals promise sensational content, such as leaked videos, to lure you into clicking on their poisoned links. Better to get your information from a website you trust."
The best thing you can do is use security software, whether it's from Norton or another reputable firm, to alert you to any possibly dangerous websites you might stumble upon, as well as make sure you have the latest version of your Web browser's software.

With hat trick, Messi sets Barcelona goals record
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Step aside John Cruyff. Move over Laszlo Kubala, Romario and Ronald Koeman. And, please, don't even mention Ronaldinho.
If anyone doubted who is the best scorer to don Barcelona's burgundy and blue, Lionel Messi ended the debate in emphatic fashion on Tuesday night with a hat trick to become the club's career goals leader.
Messi broke Cesar Rodriguez's 57-year-old Barcelona record, getting his eighth hat trick of the season in a 5-3 Spanish league win over Granada that increased his goals total to 234.
"We are before the best player in absolutely every facet," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. "He is capable of everything that a football player must do and he does it every three days. I am sorry for those who want to dethrone him, but he is simply different from all the rest. Messi has entered the history of the club at just 24 years of age. If he continues like this in the coming years, he will score so many goals that he will never be surpassed."
Guardiola said that Messi was to soccer what Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan was to basketball.
"Jordan dominated his sport and Messi dominates this one," the former Barcelona midfielder said. "The first thing about Messi to point out is his mentality. He has great quality, of course. But the important thing is his mental strength."
While Cesar set the mark in 13 seasons from 1942-1955, Messi needed just under eight campaigns to pass his milestone.
"He is defining an era. He is the best," Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdez said.
Nicknamed "The Flea" for his headlong, goal-bound bursts, Messi made his Barcelona debut in 2004.
He tied Cesar's record on a left-footed shot in the 17th minute for his 232nd goal, then chipped the goalkeeper for a 3-2 lead in the 67th. He added a goal from a tight angle in the 86th, increasing his season total to a career-best 54.
A three-time FIFA player of the year, Messi has 17 goals during a seven-game scoring streak and leads La Liga with 34 goals, two ahead of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.
The hat trick was Messi's 18th for Barcelona and gave him 154 goals in his last 153 games over three seasons. His six hat tricks in La Liga this season tie the record set by Ronaldo last year.
Messi has scored 153 goals in the Spanish league, 49 in the Champions League, 19 in the Copa del Rey, eight in the Spanish Supercup, four in the Club World Cup and one in the European Supercup.
Late Monday, Barcelona announced Cesar's total from 1942-55 was three fewer than the team previously said. A review by Barcelona's Center of Documentation and Studies and the La Vanguardia newspaper determined Cesar did not score goals attributed to him during the 1947-48, 1948-49, 1949-50 and 1952-53 seasons and also credited him with an additional goal in 1945-46.
Barcelona's sixth consecutive league win cut first-place Real Madrid's lead to five points ahead of its game at Villarreal on Wednesday.
"Messi was calm as always after the game and thanked us all for our efforts," said Cristian Tello, who also scored for Barcelona. "I have no doubt that he will end up as the best to have ever played this sport. Each game he shows that he is on another level. He doesn't stop surprising us."
