Ovarian cancer study proves drug delays disease progression, may improve survival
Thursday, December 29, 2011Treating ovarian cancer with the drug bevacizumab ("Avastin") delays the disease and may also improve survival, show the results of an international clinical trial co-led by Drs. Amit Oza of the Princess Margaret Cancer Program, University Health Network and Timothy Perren, St James's Institute of Oncology, Leeds, UK.
The findings, published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, report that the drug halted the cancer's return for two months overall. However, for women with the highest risk disease, the delay was five to six months and in this group, the findings also indicate a strong trend to improved overall survival, which is being analysed until 2013.
"This is the first new drug in ovarian cancer in 15 years to improve outcome and I believe it should be considered as a potential new standard of care," says Dr. Oza, a medical oncologist who leads the Cancer Clinical Research Unit at Princess Margaret Hospital. He is also co-director of the hospital's Bras Family Drug Development Program and Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.
The seven-year study began in 2004 and enrolled 1,528 women with ovarian cancer at 263 centres, including 20 in Canada. Avastin was added to chemotherapy treatment and given intravenously every three weeks for 12 months.
The drug blocks growth factors that promote new blood vessels formation in tumours, thereby "starving" the cancer. It is not a cure, explains Dr. Oza, but has a proven track record in delaying disease progression in other types of cancer including colorectal, lung, breast, kidney and brain.
"We now know that using Avastin in ovarian cancer for even this short time improves outcomes," says Dr. Oza. "The next step is to determine if giving it for a longer period would be of even greater benefit."
Similar findings from a U.S. study are also reported in this issue of the journal. Dr. Oza says the major difference between the two studies is that the women in the American study were given twice as much Avastin. "So the question now is would half the dose for double the duration improve outcomes even more? This is an area to investigate further."

COMMENTARY | According to RTT News, Donald Trump will be hosting a GOP debate sponsored by the conservative website NewsMax. Now, I do not want to go on the bandwagon of people saying Trump is doing this for attention, but he is.
Earlier in the year, with the controversy surrounding the Barack Obama birth certificate issue, Trump might have had something resembling a shot at running. But people quickly realized he is a walking circus act that practically any time he says anything, it is to make people more aware of Trump.
There are several GOP candidates who are going to attend the debate at the end of December. Ron Paul, as stated in an interview on CNN's State Of The Union, said he didn't quite understand his status in the election. I'm going to go on record and say I agree with Paul.
Trump is essentially a living caricature. He makes a living more out of waking up every morning and being Trump than any real estate deal or casino he is a part of. For the GOP to have a chance in an election against Obama, everything that is held under their auspices needs to be done with the utmost seriousness. Having a man that hosts a reality show where he instructs people to design soda cans is not the right guy to host a debate.
So far, The Hill is reporting at least one other GOP candidate will skip the debate. Anyone who attends might end up getting caught up in the Trump circus. Eventually, Trump will find some way to make the debate about himself and turn it into another advertisement for his myriad of products that bear his name. If the GOP is looking for Trump to lend it credibility, it might as well have Mayor McCheese host the NewsMax debate.

New planet discovery excites scientists: the discovery of a new planet 600 light years away with roughly the right temperature for plant and animal habitation is causing a buzz in the science community. ?Though much larger than Earth, scientists haven't ruled out the possibility of life being discovered.
A newly discovered?planet?is eerily similar to Earth and is sitting outside Earth's solar system in what seems to be the ideal place for life, except for one hitch. It is a bit too big.
Skip to next paragraphThe?planet?is smack in the middle of what astronomers call the Goldilocks zone, that hard to find place that is not too hot, not too cold, where water, which is essential for life, does not freeze or boil. And it has a shopping mall-like surface temperature of near 72 degrees, scientists say.
The?planet's?confirmation was announced Monday by NASA along with other discoveries by its Kepler telescope, which was launched on a planet-hunting mission in 2009.
That is the first?planet?confirmed in the habitable zone for Kepler, which already had found Earth-like rockyplanets?elsewhere. Twice before astronomers have announced a?planet?found in that zone, but neither has been as promising.
"This is a phenomenal discovery in the course of human history," Geoff Marcy of University of California, Berkeley, one of the pioneers of planet-hunting outside Earth's solar system, said in an email. "This discovery shows that we Homo sapiens are straining our reach into the universe to find?planets?that remind us of home. We are almost there."
The new?planet, named Kepler-22b, has key aspects it shares with Earth. It circles a star that could be the twin of Earth's sun and at just about the same distance. The?planet's?year of 290 days is even close to Earth's. It probably has water and rock.
The only trouble is the?planet's?a bit big for life to exist on the surface. The?planet?is about 2.4 times the size of Earth. It could be more like the gas-and-liquid Neptune with only a rocky core and mostly ocean.
"It's so exciting to imagine the possibilities," said Natalie Batalha, the Kepler deputy science chief.
Floating on that "world completely covered in water" could be like being on an Earth ocean and "it's not beyond the realm of possibility that life could exist in such an ocean," Batalha said in a phone interview.
Kepler cannot find life itself, just where the conditions might be right for it to thrive. And when astronomers look for life elsewhere, they are talking about everything ranging from microbes to advanced intelligence that can be looking back at us.
So far the Kepler telescope has spotted 2,326 candidate?planets?outside Earth's solar system with 139 of them potentially habitable ones. Even though the confirmed Kepler-22b is a bit big, it is smaller than most of the other candidates. It is closest to Earth in size, temperature and star than either of the two previously announced?planets?in the zone.
The confirmation of one of two, though, has been disputed. The latest discovery has been confirmed several ways, including by two other telescopes.
This year, a European team of astronomers said they had confirmed another?planet?in the habitable zone, but that one was hot and barely on the inside edge of the habitable zone.
For Marcy, who is on the Kepler team, the newest?planet?is a smidgen too large. But, "that smidgen makes all the difference," he said.
Because its size implies that it is closer to Neptune in composition than Earth, "I would bet my telescope that there is no hard, rocky surface to walk on," Marcy said.
Chief Kepler scientist William Borucki said he thinks the?planet?is somewhere between Earth and gas-and-liquid Neptune, but that it has a lot of rocky material. It is in a size range that scientists do not really know anything about. Measurements next summer may help astronomers have a better idea of its makeup, he said.
The?planet?is 600 light years away. Each light year is 5.9 trillion miles. It would take a space shuttle about 22 million years to get there.
Kepler spots a?planet?when it passes in front of its star. NASA requires three of those sightings before it begins to confirm it as a?planet. Borucki said the third sighting for 22b happened a year ago, just before the telescope shut down for a while. It took several months to finish the confirmation.
"It's a great gift," Borucki said. "We consider this sort of our Christmas?planet."

I am seeking Fantasy roleplay, prefferably Dark Fantasy. I like my Fantasy with some dark, blood encrusted edges. ;) I have also always liked playing villains. It's challenging, but always fun, I have no problems dieing, so long as my character had a good long run of tormenting our beloved heroes.
I of course enjoy a lot of Roleplays in a fantasy setting, from J.R.R. Tolkeins kind of writtings, to R.A. Salvatore. Even some historical fiction when the mood strikes me! I digress, I am rambling. I hope to become an active member of this site, make some friends, and share a lot of fun!

New York ? The feds announce that 120,000 new jobs were added in November, while the unemployment rate dropped sharply to 8.6 percent. A 'Christmas miracle'?
"Happy holidays" and a "Christmas miracle." Those are among the sunny phrases being used to describe the November jobs report. On Friday, the Department of Labor announced that the unemployment rate dropped to 8.6 percent last month, and that the economy added 120,000 new jobs in November. But, as always, it's not all good news. Here, five takeaways from the report:
1. The unemployment rate is at a two-year low
The unemployment rate, which was 9 percent in October, fell to 8.6 percent ? the lowest it's been since March 2009. That's "a remarkable drop down to a two-year-low after a year in which the percentage of unemployed hardly ever budged," says Andrew Leonard at Salon. The U-6, a broader measure of unemployment that counts part-time workers and those who have given up looking for a job, also dropped ? from 16.2 percent to 15.6 percent. "We are blown away from the solid tone of the incoming U.S. data," says economist David Rosenberg. "If this persists into Q1, then the recession call is off the table."

2. But that's not necessarily a good thing
The fact that the unemployment rate dropped a whopping 0.4 percent on a gain of just 120,000 jobs signals that many Americans have simply given up looking for work, says Leonard.?In November,?350,000?people dropped out of the labor force, and when the potential workforce shrinks, it takes fewer new jobs to lower the unemployment rate.?"A truly positive unemployment number for December might be one in which the unemployment rate rises ? if there is a substantial increase in the number of Americans who start looking for work again, that could mean real labor market positive momentum."?
3. Many of the new jobs don't pay well
Nearly 50,000 of the new jobs were in retail, says Don Lee in the Los Angeles Times. That's "the second strongest November hiring by stores in a decade." (The Labor Department adjusts its numbers for seasonal trends, so this hiring boom isn't necessarily holiday-related.) The leisure and hospitality sector added 22,000 jobs, while another "lower-paying sector," temporary help, also accounted for much of the job growth. Meanwhile, manufacturing remains stagnant, and 20,000 jobs in the public sector were slashed in November.

4. The economy is slowly improving
This report "comes on the heels of other data suggesting a strengthening of the economy," says Lee. "Consumer spending, manufacturing and exports, and business investment and confidence all have edged higher since summer ? despite significant concerns about the European debt crisis, the still-moribund American housing market, government cutbacks and political paralysis in Washington." Perhaps most encouraging, Friday's report also revised the numbers from September and October, noting that 72,000 more jobs than initially thought were added in those two months.
5. But then again...
"Of course, it's not all good news," says Aliyah Shahid in the New York?Daily News. Over the last three months, the economy has added a monthly average of 114,000 net jobs. That's "barely enough to keep up with the population growth." Clearly,?"the labor market still has a long way to go to recover from the financial crisis," says Annalyn Censky at CNN Money. "Less than a third of all the 8.8 million jobs shed have since been recovered. A whopping 13.3 million people remain unemployed and 43 percent of those have been out of work for more than six months."

BOSTON (AP) ? The Boston Red Sox may have already gotten what they were looking for from Bobby V.
In a move that had reverberated from Kenmore Square to the backyard of the rival New York Yankees, the Red Sox introduced Bobby Valentine as their new manager on Thursday, turning to him to lead the ballclub back to the playoffs and help Boston forget this season's unprecedented September collapse.
"I am honored, I am humbled and I am pretty (darn) excited," Valentine said during the news conference in a Fenway Park premium club. "It's more than a special day. It's the beginning of a life that's going to extend beyond anything I thought I'd be doing. The talent level of the players we have in this organization is a gift to anyone, and I think I'm a receiver of this gift.
"I think we're going to do this, man," he said, smiling and turning to shake hands with general manager Ben Cherington. "And I really and truly appreciate this opportunity."
The 61-year-old former Mets and Rangers manager agreed to a two-year deal with club options for 2014 and 2015. The news conference was attended by owner John Henry and his wife, by Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino, by an entourage of friends from Stamford, Conn., by dozens of team employees and by about 100 members of the media, many of them from New York outlets that covered Valentine in his days with the Mets.
"There is a buzz," Lucchino said, acknowledging that Valentine's personality and his history in New York could enhance an already intense AL East rivalry with the Yankees. "I think it does add a little bit of kerosene to the fire."
The event was catered ? wraps were served, naturally, for the man who claims to have invented them. The director of public safety in Stamford, where he runs a restaurant and an athletic training facility, Valentine is also a cooking and ballroom dancing aficionado, the son-in-law of former major leaguer Ralph Branca and, most recently, an analyst on ESPN.
Valentine, who also guided the Chiba Lotte Marines to a 2005 championship, greeted one reporter in Japanese.
"Bobby's a big personality," Henry said. "I think that's a plus."
Valentine brings to Boston a reputation as a polarizing figure who wasn't afraid to criticize his players publicly ? something former Red Sox manager Terry Francona never did ? and who bickered with his boss at the Mets. But he takes over a team with a bit of a reputation problem of its own: After going 7-20 in September and missing the playoffs by one game, the Red Sox have been hounded by reports that players drank beer and ate fried chicken in the clubhouse during games instead of sitting in the dugout to support their teammates.
"I didn't see it first hand," Valentine cautioned, before saying about the team what he could have said in his own defense: "Reputation is something other people think about you. Right now maybe this group of guys has a reputation that is not warranted. ... I can tell you I look forward to working with this group and establishing a culture of excellence."
Vowing to get to know the players personally first, Valentine said there was no single way to restore discipline to a clubhouse.
"I don't have a Ten Commandments of Baseball that I'm going to recite to them," he said.
Valentine took the Mets to the 2000 World Series, where they lost to the Yankees, but he was fired after a last-place finish led to clubhouse turmoil two years later. Depending on whom you believe, he was either a relentless self-promoter or honest to a fault.
"I think people who take the time to get to know me understand I have some qualities in my character that are OK," he said. "I'm not a monster who breathes fire who some people refer to me as. I'm a guy, a regular human being with regular feelings."
Valentine said that he had learned from his previous managerial jobs.
But one thing won't change.
"I'm still going to get frustrated when things aren't done in an excellent way," he said. "I'm still going to get out early to try to fix everything in the world and I'm still going to go to bed (angry) that I didn't do enough."
Valentine was a late entry in Boston's managerial search ? at least publicly, as the Red Sox left him off their initial short list because he was in a visible position as an ESPN analyst at the time. Pete Mackanin, Sandy Alomar Jr., Dale Sveum, Torey Lovullo and Gene Lamont were also interviewed; Lamont was also a finalist.
"It was not a tightly ordered, linear process," Lucchino said. "It never is."
Cherington denied reports that Valentine was forced on him by Lucchino and Henry.
"It's just not true," said the new GM, who was promoted when Theo Epstein left to become president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs. "I feel very strongly we found the right person in Bobby Valentine."
Valentine said he didn't allow himself to believe he could get the job until he received a text message from Cherington ? pulling out his cellphone to read reporters the time: 8:37 a.m. on Nov. 29. "I would wake up at night thinking there's a chance and then say, 'Don't go there. You're going to get your heart broken,'" said Valentine, who was in Japan on a goodwill visit when he got the news.
Valentine paid homage to the team's tradition by selecting the uniform No. 25, which was worn by his one-time roommate Tony Conigliaro. The former Red Sox outfielder's career was cut short after he was hit in the face by Jack Hamilton's fastball in 1967.
"I would gladly take it off to put it up on that wall," Valentine said, pointing to the facade where the Red Sox retired numbers hang.
"I understand the rich tradition of baseball in this city, of sports in this community. I understand the rivalries this team has. And I understand the great talent on this team."
Valentine said he got a taste of a Yankees rivalry with the Mets. But they only played six times a season in interleague play; the division opponents play 18 games in 2012.
"I'm really excited," Valentine said. "I know the Yankees always have a team where you have to put your best foot forward when you're playing them.
"I think we're going to be able to match them," he said. "It's not going to be the best team that wins, but the team that plays the best."

Umm, a few years. I started roleplaying with my friend over the phone, where we'd make up really stupid undeveloped characters and put them in odd situations.

Well, just a place to roleplay. I roleplay on another site, but the roleplays over there are falling apart and the admins are being meaners. (Not mentioning the site...)

JOHANNESBURG ? Traffic officials say a crash involving a van and a truck in eastern South Africa has killed all 18 people aboard the two vehicles, including a baby.
In a statement, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said the driver of the van, which was carrying passengers from neighboring Mozambique to Johannesburg, veered from his lane and hit the truck head-on early Thursday.
Ndebele says both vehicles then caught fire. Ministry officials say it appears all those aboard both vehicles were killed.
The approaching holidays mean more South Africans are on the roads, and the number of deadly accidents often increases at this time of year.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) ? Pakistan on Sunday buried 24 troops killed in a NATO cross-border air attack that has pushed a crisis in relations between the United States and an ally it needs to fight militancy toward rupture.
The incident was the latest perceived provocation by the United States, which infuriated Pakistan's powerful military with a unilateral U.S. special forces raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May.
U.S. and NATO officials are trying to defuse tensions but the soldiers' deaths are testing a bad marriage of convenience between Washington and Islamabad.
NATO helicopters and fighter jets based in Afghanistan attacked two Pakistan military outposts on Saturday, killing the soldiers in what Pakistan said was an unprovoked assault.
"This was a tragic unintended incident," NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a statement, adding that he fully supported a NATO investigation that was under way. "We will determine what happened, and draw the right lessons."
That is unlikely to cool tempers. Many Pakistanis believe their army is fighting a war against militants that only serves Western interests and hurts their country.
"U.S. stabs Pakistan in the back, again," said a headline in the Daily Times, reflecting fury over the attack in Pakistan, a regional power seen as critical to U.S. efforts to stabilize neighboring Afghanistan.
Television stations showed the coffins of the soldiers draped in green and white Pakistani flags in a prayer ceremony at the headquarters of the regional command in Peshawar attended by army chief General Ashfaq Kayani.
Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by telephone early on Sunday to convey "the deep sense of rage felt across Pakistan."
"This negates the progress made by the two countries on improving relations and forces Pakistan to revisit the terms of engagement," a Foreign Ministry statement quoted Khar as telling her U.S. counterpart.
Khar also informed Clinton that Pakistan wants the United States to vacate a drone aircraft base in the country.
Pakistan shut down NATO supply routes into Afghanistan -- used for sending in nearly half of the alliance's land shipments -- in retaliation for the worst such attack since Islamabad uneasily allied itself with Washington following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
About 500 members of Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan's most influential religious party, staged a protest in Mohmand tribal area, where the NATO attack took place.
"Down with America" and "Jihad is The Only Answer to America," they yelled.
Pakistan is reviewing whether it will go ahead with plans to attend a major international conference in Bonn next month on the future of Afghanistan in light of the NATO attack.
Around 40 troops were stationed at the outposts at the time of the attack, military sources said.
"They without any reasons attacked on our post and killed soldiers asleep," said a senior Pakistani officer.
BLUNT STATEMENTS
The border is often poorly marked, and Afghan and Pakistani maps have differences of several kilometers in some places, military officials have said.
Pakistan responded with unusually blunt condemnations and said it reserved the right to retaliate.
Pakistan is a vital land route for nearly half of NATO supplies shipped overland to its troops in Afghanistan. Land shipments account for about two thirds of the alliance's cargo into Afghanistan.
A similar incident on Sept 30, 2010, which killed two Pakistani service personnel, led to the closure of one of NATO's supply routes through Pakistan for 10 days.
U.S. ties with Pakistan have suffered several big setbacks starting with the unilateral U.S. special forces raid in May that killed bin Laden in a Pakistani town where he had apparently been living for years.
Pakistan condemned the secret operation as a flagrant violation of its sovereignty, while suspicions arose in Washington that members of Pakistan's military intelligence had harbored the al Qaeda leader.
The military came under unprecedented criticism from both Pakistanis who said it failed to protect the country and American officials who said bin Laden's presence was proof the country was an unreliable ally in the war on militancy.
Pakistan's army, one of the world's largest, may see the NATO incursion from Afghanistan as a chance to reassert itself, especially since the deaths of the soldiers are likely to unite generals and politicians, whose ties are normally uneasy.
Pakistan's jailing of a CIA contractor, Raymond Davis, and U.S. accusations that Pakistan backed a militant attack on the U.S. embassy in Kabul have added to the tensions.
"From Raymond Davis and his gun slinging in the streets of Lahore to the Osama bin Laden incident, and now to the firing on Pakistani soldiers on the volatile Pakistan-Afghan border, things hardly seem able to get any worse," said the Daily Times.
Islamabad depends on billions in U.S. aid and Washington believes Pakistan can help it bring about peace in Afghanistan ahead of a combat troop withdrawal at the end of 2014.
"The fact is that such incursions of our sovereignty have become routine and we have become so dependent on the U.S. that we just have to grin and bear it," said an editorial in Pakistan's Express Tribune.
In Karachi port, dozens of truck drivers who should have been transporting supplies to Afghanistan were idle.
Taj Malli braves the threat of Taliban attacks to deliver supplies to Afghanistan so that he can support his children. But he thinks it is time to block the route permanently in protest.
"Pakistan is more important than money. The government must stop all supplies to NATO so that they realize the importance of Pakistan," he said.
But some Pakistanis doubt their leaders have the resolve to challenge the United States.
"This government is cowardly. It will do nothing," said Peshawar shopkeeper Sabir Khan. "Similar attacks happened in the past, but what have they done?"

Getty ImagesIn the days since Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh pushed the helmet of Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith into the ground and then stomped on his arm while walking away, a sense has emerged that Suh should receiving a suspension of two or more games, given his history and the egregious nature of his conduct.
But a multi-game suspension may not happen, given the history of suspensions for on-field conduct meted out by Commissioner Roger Goodell.? Apart from the five-game suspension received in 2006 by former Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (who coincidentally returns to Tennessee today in his third game with the Buccaneers), no player has been suspended for more than one game by Goodell, via Gene Washington.
The following year, Goodell (via Washington) suspended former Cowboys safety Roy Williams one game after his third horse-collar tackle of the season.
The next year, Goodell (via Ray Anderson) suspended Buccaneers defensive back Elbert Mack one game for launching himself and making helmet-to-helmet contact with Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan; it was Mack?s second flagrant hit in three games.? Also in 2008, Jets safety Eric Smith received a one-game suspension and a $50,000 fine for a flagrant helmet-to-helmet hit on then-Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin.
In 2009, Goodell (again via Ray Anderson) suspended Dante Wesley of the Panthers for launching at Bucs punt returner Clifton Smith while he was waiting to catch the ball.? Wesley struck Smith in the head with a shoulder and forearm.
Again, Suh?s history of fines will be a factor, and his failure to express genuine remorse won?t help him.? Balanced against that will be the fact that he already has essentially been suspended for nearly half of one game, since he was ejected early in the third quarter.
So don?t be surprised if Suh is suspended for only one game.? Though he committed a Haynesworthy stomp, there?s a huge difference between stepping on a guy?s arm, which Suh did, and ripping off a player?s helmet and shredding his bare forehead with a cleat, which Haynesworth did.
